Aurora, our 5 week old Kitten as of this Tuesday, the 26h of June, is having a bit of difficulty with weaning. We have been trying for two weeks just to introduce her to food in the tiny kitten bowl but she just wont take. I have had one incident where she actually started suckling (I got photos of it, too, of course as I was very excited) but that was the first...and unfortunatly the last event of such good behaviour.

She is getting very fussy when we bottle feed her, scratching at us, digging in her claws, clawing at the bottle, hitting it out of her mouth as she is suckling so hard to trying to get it as if she expects us to take it away, and biting the nipple. The hole is the perfect size, and there is no problem with suckling. But... she also tries to nibble at my fingers between feedings, so I try some softened kitten chow- nothing. I try some baby rice cereal in a dish with several different consistencies including a mix with KMR... nothing. She actually is acting afraid of the dish. She will also refuse to even go near a bowl of water after her first try where she sniffed it up her nose.

I try putting the KMR mixed with baby rice cereal on a spoon, and put some in her mouth.. she isn't too sure about it, but suckles the moisture out of it about 20% of the tries, until she swallows, and I continue this getting her closer and closer to the dish, and then once at the dish, she stops. Dead. No movement other than reverse! sometimes she puts her head in to the dish to suckle, but the most is for about 3 seconds, then she leaves.

The good news is that she is getting close to being 100% litter trained, as She has gone successfuly over 7 times now after setting her in the box in the last while just under a week.. so I was hoping that maybe her feeding skills would develope quicker than it has.

I have also tried leaving a bit of food in a dish in her crate with her, but nothing.. not even a dent in it from a paw. I am sad, as I really think it would help her out a bit to be able to eat on her own.

I have some kittens that take much longer to wean on to solids, just keep at it, and as long as she is gaining and not getting dehydrated, that is what is important. Is she drinking water yet?
Keep giving the moistened kibble, and one day you will notice she will really take off eating. 5 weeks for our kittens usually is really early, but I know for others it isn't, so she is going to do this on her own time, it looks like.

Good luck, and hopefully someone has a better suggestion. Our babies love baby food in chicken or turkey.

Actually she is deathly afraid of drinking water on her own, but we do make sure that her KMR and Rice Cereal have a very high percentage of water in it to keep good stools and to keep her hydrated. She is getting rather fussy though.. quite hard to handle sometimes during feeding, bt at other times she is a doll.

I have 10 kittens that have been weaned for about 3 weeks now. I started out introducing the KMR in a bowl, and only two of them liked that. Then I set out a dish of canned food. 4 or 5 of them went crazy over that so I kept putting it out. Over the course of about 3 days, the other kittens started to catch on. Then I had 8 of 10 eating the canned food. I wasn't really very concerned about it because they were still young. It was about a week later and out of curiousity I set down a bowl of dry food and one of the two that hadn't tried eating the canned food started eating the dry food like it was the best thing she'd ever had! Now they are all eating both canned and dry but I learned pretty quickly that every one of them is different... what some like, others don't.

you can also try some boiled chicken shredded , and also baby food just make sure there are no oniouns , veg etc.. just meats mainly.
have you tried not useing a bowl? try a paper plate and see how that goes, i have only ever mixed water into the wet kitten food to start them of.

Good mention on the onions, ect. I stay with stage 1 Gerber pureed chicken and turkey, only meats.
I also use a paperplate, using sometimes a baby rubber tipped spoon, they don't like bowls either.
More good suggestions.

I just reread your post, my husband actually pointed it out, that she turns 5 weeks old today, and that for 2 weeks, you have been trying solids, so it really is not unusual. I am guessing this is an abandoned kitten? I don't know the back story, I am sorry. Each litter and singleton I have had is different, but 8/10 times, I would say, I usually don't have a kitten weaning this early, they are just disinterested still, and still having that nursing reflex. It is good that you are weaning earlier that most, since it sounds like the Mom kitty isn't in the picture, as normally she would still be nursing Momma.
KMR is good, it is best to mix it to direction for her age, just so she is still gettting the right amount of nutrient, but I would also have a small lipped bowl for her to start experiencing water. However, with weaning, you mention already diluting the KMR, so you may could continue diluting it more daily, and eventually get her drinking water.
It is great you are keepin an eye for dehydration and stools, it is funny we can get excited when our babies have good BM's...LOL
Good luck, she will get there, is she thriving every other way?
