I was wondering if anyone knows how a Dyson compares to a Rainbow? My mom & dad recently bought one (Rainbow) last year. They had an appointment set up for someone to come into their home to do a demonstration. When I went there after work, the girl was still there...and I could tell that my mom had purchased it. After the representative left, I asked her what make her buy it, since she had previously told me she wasn't going to buy one. She said, "I saw what it did". She said she had vacuumed the area rugs before the girl came, and the girl used the Rainbow and picked up ALOT more cat hair as well as dirt. The Rainbow cost them almost $2000!!!

My mom used to have a old rainbow that you had to put water in the bottom of. that thing worked like a champ. I have no idea why they got rid of it!! They have a dyson now and that thing is AWESOME!! Not as big and bulky as the rainbow and picks up everything!

my mom cleans houses for a living- and many years ago she had an AMAZING vaccume cleaner (The Rainbow) and man that thing lasted her for years and did an incredable job of getting everything clean. It was also good for people who had allergies/etc- the bottom of the canister you put water in and then you dumped it out when your done vaccuming. They're worth it if they're anything like the one my mom used to have!!! The only thing i don't like about them is the price!! They're WAY too expensive (BUT they are an investment so you just have to weigh the options.) We have a Dyson Animal at the shelter where i work and man i LOVE that thing! That will definitely be the next model of vaccume cleaner we will by when that time comes.
They are also priced better than rainbows.

I'll look it up in Consumer Reports for you. Is it an upright or cannister and do have the model number?

I found the Rainbow E series (canister). The rating categories are Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

Excellent ratings: Pet Hair and Emissions
Very Good ratings: Cleaning bare floors
Good ratings: Cleaning with tools and noise
Fair ratings: Cleaning carpets and handling
Poor rating: none

Dyson DC14 Animal (upright):

Excellent: Cleaning bare floors and emissions
Very good: none
Good: Cleaning carpet, cleaning with tools, noise and handling
Fair: Pet hair
Poor: none

I'm amazed that the Dyson animal only does fair with pet hair.

I got to really use mine today I just got that DC14 and I will say that I have never had a vacuum so easy to handle and the attachments are wonderful on cat hair, I used to clean for living also I still do some. I have had pretty much every kind of Vacuum and the oreck is not that grand at all and its the same price or more, I have used built in Vaccums there not that grand either...I looked and looked and finally got the Dyson and with a 5 year warranty I thought it was great and it is not that loud at all ..

I don't know about Dyson, but I do know about Rainbow vacuums!

Many years ago I used to work with a vacuum cleaner company and learned all about the various types of vacuums that were being sold at that time, Rainbow was one.

If they haven't changed, they still have water in the cannister.

Those things are horrendously messy to empty and clean and you have to do it each time you use it because the water stagnates and starts to stink.
