Hi everyone, I am new here and need a little help.

I have never had cats before, because my mother and brother are very allergic to them. I now live in an apartment, and decided I wanted to get a cat. I did my research, as well as have many friends who have cats who are here to help me out. Yesterday, I went to my local APL and adopted a 3 month old male tuxedo kitten. He was very playful there, and didnt mind being held. I bring him home, and keep him in 1 room (as they suggested until he gets used to the new house) all he does is hide. I can get him to come out with one of those feather teaser things, and he will come out and play, but as soon as he is done, he runs back and hides under the dresser. he comes out to eat, and use the litter box, but that is it. He acts like he is very scared when anyone is in the room. Even when he is out to play, if I make any sudden movements, he runs and hides. Is this normal? I dont want him to turn into one of the cats that do nothing but hide all of the time. Is there anything I can do to make him more comfortable? I get him out to play every few hours for about a half hour. I can pet him, and sometimes pick him up, and he even purrs, but then gets spooked and runs and hides.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks!

its perfectly normal. he is scared, and it will take a few days for him to get used to you and his new surroundings. Best idea IMO is to find a treat he likes, and every time you come into the room, offer him a treat. Be slow in movements till he is trusting of you. sit down near him, and talk to him, play and pet if he lets you, so he associates you with good things.

He will come out of his shell

Since you adopted him at 3 months, its a good chance he came in there a few weeks younger, so the social skills will be a little slower. If you just recently got him, then it could take several weeks for him to adjust to things.

Try leaving a radio on in the room he's in so he's more use to people sounds (like a talk radio station).

Keep playing with him and he'll come around.

Post pictures when he comes out of hiding
