My cat, Millie, had 3 kittens 11 days ago and this morning they weren't in their box. I found them in the utility room on a towel. I moved them back to their box, but she didn't like and moved them back to the utility room. So I put a towel down for them and a basket (which she is also refusing to use). Then I came in earlier and shes put one of the kittens back in the original box, but left the other two in the utility room. She was going between the two places but mainly staying in the original box with the one kitten, who was meiowing a lot. I thought he was probably lonely so put him back with his siblings about 10 mins ago. Millie is now with them all, but she's meiowing a lot and staring at me. Is this normal behaviour??? It seems a bit random??? Thanks in advance!

Smudges kittens are nearly 7 weeks now and she is still trying to move them. When they started to climb out of their box i put them in a V big dog cage downstairs and all the time she was moving them. i Just kept putting them back in the cage and she give up then.

Maybe your cat thinks the area you want them is not safe, too cold etc. Smudge just done it to show who was boss i think.

From reading many posts over the last two months i know alot of people on the site have had the same problem.

Hi , there can be a number of reason a mother will do this.
1 being saftey, have you got other cats? dogs? young children? if she isnt in a quiet room of her own then she will move them about.
another can be ,was it the box that she gave birth in? sometimes the smell from the birth can make mum move the babys. even if you have changed the towles etc.. they can still smell it.
or she might just like moving them , especially first time moms.
hope she settles with them soon . but i would advise to put her in a room with her and the kittens, a litter pan and freash water and food.

Oh ok,thanks! The original box is much more safe and nice and warm, the utility room has wires and stuff and their not in a box. I'll just shove them all back in the original box then. Thank you! I was worried when she singled out the one kitten their might be something wrong with him or something, but she's left him where he is now.

We do have other cats and a dog but the box is in the study which is attatched to the utility room and we're keeping the door shut so the other pets can't come in. She gave birth in a carboard box and I have swapped it for a plastic one so that's not it either. She is a first time mum though so that's most likely the reason, I've just put them back in the box now and she hasn't moved them yet so *fingers crossed*

Thanks for the help!

We had 2 mums give birth within a week of each other, the first was happy to leave her kittens in the box we provided, but the second one decided she wanted hers behind the sofa, after a few battles we gave in, pulled the sofa out and covered the area with a big blanket (she didnt like them in the box either), after 2 days the other mum put hers there too. All 6 kittens and both mums have lived happily together ever since. The kittens are now 6 weeks old and all go to either mum and both mums care for any kitten.

One of my cats liked to move hers every couple weeks. She would be happy with the box I gave her for a while and then all of sudden she would move them. I learned to give up and just make the area she picked safer and more comfortable.

When Uno had her kittens it became very warm in our bedroom. I tried to move them downstairs but she just took them back upstairs. We eventully even had to put the kitty play yard up in out bedroom so they could safely play. They remained in there until they eventually crawled out and at that point momma could no longer keep them from exploring the downstairs
