Hi,

I have noticed in several different places the mention of lice on cats. Is the lice that cats get the same lice humans get or is it a different variety that is species specific?

Lice are about half the size of fleas: 1mm (1/32 inch) which can be seen by the naked eye. They are yellowish/white in color and stick to the cat's hair. Cat lice cannot affect humans, and Human lice cannot affect cats.

Lice can cause anemia, itching, appetite loss, temperament changes and general discomfort in your cat. There are several shampoo's and sprays that you can use to kill the lice. Contact a veterinarian for special prescriptions and additional instructions they may have.

Oh YES cats get lice! I have a sweet kitten with it. It is very easy and obvious to distingush between lice and fleas bc of the nits.

It is different then human lice, but the same basic idea. Cats can pass it to each other, but not to humans or other animals. They only live a short time off the cat.
