Hi fellow crazy cat people!
I found "this place" when I was looking for some factual sites on declawing. I am a semi-active member of another forum of pet lovers, but was unpleasantly surprised about how "ok" they are with declawing. So long story short, I stumbled across a thread here about being against declaw, and figured I better join.
I still frequent the other board, but I know I'm outnumbered in the declawing dept. with them.
I'm ashamed to say (please don't throw rocks) that I'm not *technically* a cat person. Until last October, I was strictly a bird person. I have had my share (and then some) of temporary foster cats, young and old. But had always swore I would NEVER keep one, because cats and birds....they don't mix.
And then along came "Bird".
Bird is a tortie girl who somehow wound up in the small patch of woods behind my house. She mewed for 2 days before I was able to catch her, with a homemade trap (dog kennel, can of tuna, and a piece of string, with me on the other end, hiding, in the rain. I kid you not, I felt like I was 12
).
When I released her in my bathroom, all hell broke loose, and stayed broke for a few days. She destroyed things in a panic, including candles on the tub and my curtains, trying to escape from evil ol' me. But once she started to trust me, it took a couple of weeks, but she eventually came around.
She loves me, *likes* my husband. Tolerates my son. And is completely and utterly terrified of any other humans, no matter what. She will freak out and slam herself into walls if she is "caught" in the living room by a stranger. We've worked around that, and make her go to the bedroom before company comes. So being that I absolutely adore her, (quirks and all) and her being completely unadoptable, she's permanently mine.
I am also owned by 4 birds (an african grey, two cockatiels, and a parrotlet), my chihuahua Peanut, 4 rats, and my son has a gerbil and a fishtank.
Right now I'm fostering two former feral kittens. Two tabbies, one boy one girl. They have two more siblings, however they were not to be caught.
They are approximately 5-6 weeks old, and though they SHOULD be eating on their own, they're on hunger strike because they're scared so they're being syringe fed for the time being.
Glad to be here! Sorry I wrote a novel.
