Ok everyone, I have a question for you. I am seriously thinking of getting Misty a haircut, she has lots of mats and is shedding a whole lot. She is 14 years old and a scaredy cat altho she is pretty good when going to the vet's. Would her going to a groomers and waiting, then probably getting set up with a noose around her neck, would that be too stressful for her?? I just don't know what to do at this point, she has very thick hair but I don't know for sure if getting her groomed is a good idea...any opinions??

You should ask this in the care and grooming section of TCS.
I know there are people on here that have gotten their cats haircuts. I personally have not. I don't think I ever would either, unless I absolutely had to. If you do get it done though, show us pics!

If your cat is matted and you can't get them out yourself, then it's much better to take her to a professional groomer then to leave the mats to get worse. I've never seen a groomer put a noose around a cats neck. However, many of them will put a collar with a leash to keep the cats more secure. It doesn't hurt them and in fact will be less stressful and more comfortable then being severely matted. And you'd be surprised what our cats can handle. Most do very well with a good groomer. In fact many owners are shockingly surprised when their cats are reported to have been fine and perfect angels. After being professionally groomed (or shaved if that's what they end up having to do), then you'll need to follow up with regular combing and grooming to prevent mats in the future. Mats can be very painful. Especially when they are let go and get so close and tight to the skin.
