I guess I was a little surprised when this breeder volunteered to pay a house call with her cats but I think she said something about her own house being redecorated, or some such thing.

All of your input about this makes a lot of sense and is very well taken. I've had an interesting week interacting with cat breeders. Some seem eager to unload their kittens while others have given me such stringent lectures on the standard of conduct that they expect from me and my family before they would even consider selling me a cat that it's a bit like undergoing a confirmation hearing for high political office.

My impression is that this lady has two litters, one of which is ready to go at twelve weeks, the other some weeks away from that point. I think she wants to sell the older kittens to a good home because she runs her business by herself and the continued care of a litter of older kittens is probably financially and practically burdensome. Of course, it's possible I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt here and the convenience factor is significant.

The breeder called me last night asking to postpone to Saturday afternoon as she was under a lot of pressure to get another kitten onto an airplane with all of his papers, etc; it appears that a lot of cats are sold sight unseen in the U.S. Anyway, this was welcome news to me. By Saturday, she'll have all the kittens' paperwaork and veterinary records to hand, I will have new screens in place and it will be much more relaxing to hang out over at the weekend as opposed to during the week, for us all to get a sense of each other.

This breeder is registered with the CFA, has bred champion cats and has a pretty well-maintained web site. If she were playing hard to get, making demands, insisting that I come to her, talking to me about all the other people who want these kittens, I guess that, in a perverse way, I'd feel comfortable because a lack of eagerness to actually part with the cats can be seen as a mark of integrity. However, I think I need for the time being to see her as innocent before being proven guilty and to assume her motives to be pure. She hasn't yet neutered the cats because she feels they are a little young, but of course I will be contractually obliged to do so and this is reflected in the price. She's also very attached to the female, which she says is show quality but she feels she dosn't have the time to hit the road and will therefore part with this cat if it goes to a good enough home.

All this to say that I do not think there is an "agenda" here on the part of the breeder that is counter to my own best interests as the buyer but I'm a reasonably good judge of these things and my antennae will be switched on.

I'm going to take the good avice offered here and have the kittens meet my family in a smaller room. I think I will put my old Persian upstairs with her food, water and litter so that there is no contact at all between her and the kittens at this point, although of course she will know something is up and will smell other cats in the house, no doubt.

I have not yet placed all my eggs in the one basket; we are off to see some Burmese kittens in Pasadena tonight and we are still scheduled to ake the long trip south to see Abys on Sunday. But I have a feeling that, if the Ocis check out, if they are confident, healthy, well-socialised and good with the children, this is the way we'll go. The breeder appears to have her heart in the right place and I'll need to trust my own judgement in the matter of whether her kittens are up to snuff. I do not think she's attepting to "unload" cats on me, I just think she may be a little overwhelmed right now, especially as she has a brand new litter of silver Ocis to deal with.

If I have any doubts about the kittens' health or demeanor, I'll hold off and post those concerns here.

You are soooooo mean

Mentioning the fact about her silvers! I'll have to work on DH to give me a sorta timeline. In the meantime I just may inquire this breeder on what I want and her prices for future reference.

We actually got Charlie a little sooner then we thought - figured I would not have an Ocicat till just now - not back in December, so we will see

Can't wait for pictures of whatever you wind up adopting.

I can't believe we have to wait until Saturday now!!!

(j/k!) I bought my Ragdoll sight-unseen from Maine, and the breeder & I communicated so much that even though I didn't see her cattery, I feel like an old friend. (
Hi Leslye!)

I bought Spooky and then 2 yrs later his sister (for breeding) sight unseen; other then updated pictures of them. It was 6 or 7 yrs later I finally got to meet the breeder in person. I was in Maryland, the cats in MN - came up here with a kitten to show in Minnesota and met up with their breeders
- AND got to see a lot of Spooky/Lily's relatives in person

The breeder we're visiting tonight in Upland, CA, is called RoseAnn Wheeler and you'll find her web site right here.

The Burms look nice, but I'd like to know more of the background (pedigrees) on her cats - she just shows pictures of cats and kittens. No other real information.

Yes, they are slighty different to what the Europeans/Australians call "American" Burmese

Having met both types, I have a slight preference for the E Burms to the Burmese - rounder, smoother doming on the head and a stockier body type. Personality is just the same though!

CFA distinguishes the two Burmese types just like the Siamese and Colorpoint Shorthairs - it's down to color. However, as stated above, there are now obvious differences between the two types.

Well, we went to see a breeder of Burmese yesterday evening. I've already recommended her to the person looking for a Burm in another thread. This lady runs an amazingly tight ship, she's so well organized, her cats are happy and immaculately cared for and even though she has approximately four entire males, maybe as many queens, two or three retired females and two litters of kittens, there is not the faintest hint of any cat odor anywhere in her house. I'd recommend Bear Country Burmese enthusiastically to anyone looking for Burmese, especially in CA.

The kittens were all champagnes and even the tiniest ones had the unexpected physical heft that has earned the breed its reputation as "bricks encased in satin", or something similar. Their coats are like nothing else I've ever felt on a cat, velvety and luxurious and the cats' temperaments compliment this because they are so sensual and tactile, seeming to revel in human contact. Even the stud males we were introduced to at the end of the visit were sweet and compliant. These would make wonderful companion cats for single people, elderly people, anyone who doesn't want a rascal that squirms at being picked up.

Having said all that, I'm not sure this breed is for us, although I'm not dismissing it entirely. I think they'd mesh well with our old Persian and they won't be climbing the walls but only the boys showed a really playful spirit and they were all spoken for. The girls were sweet but I reckon their level of energy and playful interactivity with my children may be limited. Gorgeous felines, though, absolutely stunning, and very receptive to the language of touch between cats and their people.

So, it will be Ocis Saurday and Abys Sunday if we haven't fallen for the chocolate silver Ocicat pair by then.

BTW, I found a good pet site with rather good pet gates and doors among other things: PetEdge.

I just wanted to say Ive been really enjoying reading this thread. If everyone put this much thought and time into finding the right breed/cat for them there wouldnt be so many owner turn ins. Good luck with your search and I hope you find two kitties that will fit into your family perfectly!

Tahnk you Fostermomm, that's very sweet of you. As you can tell, I take cats very seriously. I think it's a privilege to have them in one's home.

A note from me as a breeder if you will ....

I have always found it quite important that the kitten(s) chooses you (if given the choice and not purchased through emails and telephone conversations) and not the other way around. Since you will be visiting the breeder(s) this weekend, keep a lookout for the kitten(s) that keeps coming to you (plural = your family). He/she/they may not be the best looking or cutest, but he/she/they would be the ones most true to you!

I second that

Personally, I'm rooting for the Abys
If you hadn't said you wanted short hair I'd have recommended Somalis.
