I think that I have a Russian Blue purebred kitty. After looking a a bunch of sites, I am convinced that I don't, as it states that they are very closely kept between breeders and usually don't turn up at the humane society (thats where I got mine). On the other hand I have seen tons of pictures of actual russian blue's and my Duffy looks just like them. They say their fur feels a little different (like seal fur or beaver fur) and duffy's fur feels different from all the cats I have owned. I don't know what to think, it would be nice to know if I have a purebred :-D

it's unfortunate but sometimes it happens. Perhaps someone had to surrender their pet for a number of reasons. If you post a picture we'll be able to tell you.

Yes pictures would help. I bred Russian Blues so I could tell pretty much if it was or wasn't. Does your cat have silver tipping on the coat and does it have emeral green eye color? The coat of a Russian is double coated and if you run your fingers thru it it should leave lines. Not all Russians have a thick coat, some are thinner but the older lines have the proper coat/texture/tipping.

This is what a RB looks like:

Eyes are a little better in real life (better color) and yes, she has silver tips on fur.

In regards to the kitty in the link, my kitty has the EXACT same rings on her tail as the other kitty in the picture.

Those are ghost striping on the tail rings - almost every RB has them as kittens. She looks a lot like a RB - would depend more on what her final eye color is. Its more hazel/gold looking right now. I can't tell if its proper silver tipping or not from your pictures.

i would say it's a good possibility, but you'll be able to tell better in a couple of months.

i think the leather on their nose and paw pads is a certain color too in Russian Blues

sometimes it's hard to tell for sure until they grow up, with a rescue. Mouse looked very RB when she was young, but she matured into a very stocky, cobby cat. her fur was that thick, plush coat, tho. she didn't have the emerald eyes either - more of a greeny-gold. of course, i knew her heritage, that she wasn't a purebred, but she had some of the characteristics...

Laureen, that sounds a lot like my Audrey. She is incredibly dense and she's got the same color eyes that you described.

Also, it seems like a lot of purebred RBs have a very specific expression. Almost childlike, what with the shape of the muzzle and the wide-set eyes. Audrey has a much more standard cat expression.

Unfortunately without papers, she can only be called a Domestic Short Hair. Grey DSH's certainly can look very much like Russian Blues!

You'd hope a purebred RB kitten wouldn't get dumped at a shelter! She's absolutely adorable in any case - she looks very playful and sweet

Compaired to the kittens above in the previous post I do not think it is a RB. It looks to dark, it's fur doesn't lay flat, it's muzzle is not as defined as the RB, and it's eye color does not look like it is going to be emerald green. It is a close look a like but it is not a RB.

True Nicole - RB's have a distintive "smile" on their faces - the kitten doesn't seem to have it but could have RB in the background.

RB kitten's eye color goes thru stages - from blue to grey to grey with green ring to (hopefully) a dark emerald green. The kitten may not have the true eye color set till 4-5 months old.
