We rent movies at the local shop a couple of miles away. As our TV set is aging we haven't gotten around to replace (hey it still works) as its in a built in cabinet that will have to be replaced to fit th enew size of TV's. So Blockbuster can do whatever they want its not going to bother me!!

I hear you! (Fortunately, I'm not sure that J even knows blu-rays exist, and I for one have absolutely no intention of telling him!

From the reports I hear they're offering Blu-ray only because it has a "better" quality viewing than HD DVD.

How expensive is a blu-burner? I bet if it costs a lot that's the reason why. When DVDs first came to the market Blockbuster switched to them because no one could copy them at the time (dvd burners were still over $1000). They might be switching to blu-ray to prevent copies from being made.

Of course this doesn't explain the fact that I'm in IT and don't know the cost of blu-ray burners

Wow, it's like Blockbuster is trying to get suckier! I'll stick with Netflix myself.

The Hollywood Video by my Mom's house closed, so unless she want to try Famiy Video's sucktastic selection, if she wants to rent something and not wait a couple days there's only Blockbuster. I see her waiting the couple of days.

I've been reading up on this since reading this thread. Blockbuster isn't only carrying Blu-Ray, but Blu-ray is the only HD disk they will be carrying. There has been a lot of debate on which type of disk is going to be most popular. Don't forget that soon all American tv will be DTV- which is capable of carrying a high def. signal. At some point we'll all need to get new tvs or a converter- but this is a ways off. Blockbuster is not going to soley rent Blu-ray over regular DVDs. You will still be able to rent DVDs for a long time to come. Blockbuster is just exclusively renting blu-ray disks for the high definition crowd.

I like Blockbuster way, way better than Netflix. The selection doesn't even compare to me- but then again I watch a lot of obscure horror movies. Netflix doesn't even begin to carry half the obscure/rare horror movies that Blockbuster online does- not to mention the fact that I can have six movies at the same time through blockbuster- by turning in my watched online rented dvds, for in store rentals, and getting sent three more online rented dvds- it's an awesome deal for the same price.

Perhaps not too far off. One of the students I had in my class last semester was pretty high up at one of our local stations. He was telling me that in about 18 months (probably less now) all the local stations were going to sell their "Air" time and go strictly to HD-TV. The aired stations (your 2, 4, 5, 6, 7,etc) that do not require a cable box are going to have their signals sold off to cell phone companies in order to accommodate the growing number of cell phone users.

This may be only in metro Detroit, but no formal announcement has been made. The plans are supposedly in the works, but things could change in the next year.

i agree blu-ray is better i think, and if the prices start to come down, it would be fine. but at 500 dollars for the player i am not willing to change. Like the VHS and beta format for tapes let the people that do the buying pick which they want. Don try to force it. that is my thinking.

Besides, we both watch the same movies and TV shows over and over again, so it's nice to have a copy of our own.
Every Tuesday is "go to WalMart and see what movies they have". It is almost time to upgrade our dvd cabinet.... again!

I think that sometime in the future, "they" are going to have to decide which technology will be the "one", or have machines that will play both. When that happens, I will upgrade
.

Heck, I'm just now getting a dvd burner to make dvds of our vhs tapes!
