My mom has a kitty that looks similar to Button! Button is so adorable!

Here's hers, named Tiger. She is very small and very shy. She only likes my mom. When I lived there she had this weird thing where she only sat in my lap if I was sick. Sometimes I didn't even know I was sick yet, she'd be sitting in my lap and I'd go uh oh, and sure enough the next day I had a cold!

Here's Tiger:

Also, thanks for the explanation about the calico/torties! Still a bit confusing, but you explained it well.

Calico and Tortie differ in one way... Calicos have patches of [color--usually black] plus patches of orange tabby pattern on white. Torties may have white on them, even large amounts, but I don't think it's the same. I haven't found a truly good explanation for this.
.
i agree, a tortie - altho i would say, tortie & white, since she hs so much white. Java's a calico - her orange parts have stripes, her black parts dont. since this thread is now in fur pix, i'll post a some pix of her!
body pic

face pic - you can see her stripes in this one...

She has one copy of an orange gene instead of two. She's not a Torbie, which I believe (not sure.. I could be totally wrong.. google something like "genetics" "torbie") requires an extra X chromosome.

Works for me
Doesn't matter if she is tortie or torbie or calico or green
She's my little sweetie poo bear

So, because her patches are not distinct (she has the red tabby and black markings) she is a tortie, right? Her back looks tortie all the way. But, like I said, I love showing photos of her so here's more from last month

I think so. For some cats, I really think it's a judgment call on whether they're calicos or torties, because it can look so similar. She's soooo beautiful

And yes, I promise I'll post pictures of my Chili soon. I just need to get that camera out, or get onto re-sizing. I've been a member for a while and I have the feeling you guys will bring out the pitchforks if I don't cough up some pics! LOL!

I have a tortie too

Her name is Roxie.
She will be 2 in September!
She weighs about 11 lbs. (was 12, we are slowly working on a weight issue)
She has "tortitude" to the fullest!! She can be very sweet and cuddly but strictly on her terms! She is very vocal when she wants something (usually food). She really is a very good girl and shows us much affection but she will bite and scratch (not to the point of injury) when she has had enough. Every night she sleeps at the foot of the bed with BF and I. She is my little priss but I love her more than anything

I'm at work so I don't really have any good pics but here is one until I get home later:

Asking for a tummy rubble!

Everyone's babies are so pretty!! Are there any male torties out there? I would be very interested to see! (correct me if I missed one)

The tortie color is the mixed black and orange - I remember reading that the more white the cat has, the more distinct the color patches. The calicos have the distinct patches of color.

Here is Lucy showing her tortie side

and then her more calico side

Also, she is a hefty girl at 11 1/2 lbs.

This is Maisie

She is roughly 13 according to the vet.
Weighs 3.2kg which is at least half what Kitty weighs
( Thats roughly 7lb )
She is quite vocal and cuddly with me but easily stressed and doesn`t like strangers. She will hide from them

Favourite things are food and sleep with mad moments every 2-3 days.

I have a question for those in the know. Hope no one else has asked as I`ve only skimmed the thread as it`s so late here!

Why do so many torties have such a distinct line down their faces, like right down their nose? Not all I know but quite a few!

Male torties are very rare and if you do manage to find one, it's usually infertile.

It has to do with their chromazones(spelling, lol). Females have XY chrom. and males have XX chrom. Males can only have two colors(usually white and one solid color, or they are striped colors like a tabby), while females can have more than 2 colors. So, if you see a multi-colored cat, it's a 99% chance it's a female.

I know I'm not good at explaining, but I'm sure someone else will come along and explain it a little better.

Yes, I've noticed that too. I think it's so adorable. That's what made me fall in love with Bestia when I first saw her.
I have no idea why they have split faces, but it would be neat to find out.

Actually, it is the other way around. Females have XX chromosomes and the males have XY. Male Torties would have XXY which is why they are usually infertile. The color gene is on the X chromosome and since females have two, they can get a black and an orange chromosome. Males only have one so they are either black or orange. The white is actually carried on another gene as are the traits for dilution.

That's ok - I had to edit that post twice because I was into typing gibberish.

I have a mostly tortie cat, though she's got white on some of her chest, belly, and her socks.

Her name is PJ (Penny Jane). We think she's about 13 years old, and she's about 12 pounds, last we checked. She has hyperthyroidism, so her weight has oscillated quite a bit as we've regulated her.

PJ is definitely a tortie. She prefers to be pet by my fiance', and will SCREAM until he does so, particularly in the morning, on the kitchen floor. She has a unique voice, which has lots of squeaks in it. She loves having her belly rubbed, chases her tail, loves catnip, and playing in boxes - though she's sleeping in this box...

Aww a tortie thread! Kitty feels special now :]

Name: Kitty
Weight: 7 lbs
Age: almost 2 yrs old
Character: Timid but has a lot of attitude. Likes to keep to herself most of the time. Doesn't really like petting or getting picked up. Very picky about food. Also very very curious about things-- that gets her into a lot of trouble with mommy :p
