A while back, I was given a Cat Treat Recipe gift set. I never thought of using it before, but my Bailey loves cheese so much that I'm considering making him these "Dreamy Cheesers"

3/4 cup all purpose flour
3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
5 tbsps grated parmesan cheese
1/4 cup plain yogurt or sour cream
1/4 cup cornmeal

I don't like seeing the flour and cornmeal in the recipe. I'm trying to think of a better substitute for them, any suggestions?

maybe outmeal? you need some kind of grain to bind all that cheese together. you could blend the oatmeal to make oat flour [probably cheaper than buying it!]

oh yes! that's a great idea! do you think i could use it for both the flour and the cornmeal? or maybe I could use ground up dehydrated green peas instead of the cornmeal. . .

well, it doesn't have a lot of cornmeal, & they are just treats... but yeah, i think it'd work for both. might be kinda gummy, tho - cornmeal is quite a bit drier than oatmeal, as is flour. you might need it for the texture.

I agree with Laureen... they are just treats. If they are given spraringly (3-4 a week, I would assume) I don't see how the cornmeal and flour would greatly affect your kitty's diet. After all, they are treats. What good is a treat if it isn't good for you?
But I think with oatmeal, the texture wouldn't be correct. Maybe try oatmeal flour (as somebody suggested, blend it really fine for that) with the cornmeal. Sounds good!

Spelt or rye flour as opposed to all purpose flour would make a difference. Better quality
I wouldn't worry about it *so* much though. They are just treats. If it were their staple diet, I'd have big worries, but for treats, it's not so bad to give them some junky stuff now and again

Ditto

I use sweet rice flour and oatmeal for me
... Rye is too similiar to wheat for my system

Why didn't I think of that? *smacks forehead* We have some Spelt, that'd be good... great idea ya'll! Zoe doesn't care for cheese, so if I happen to stumble across a kitty treat recipe via Internet, I'll be sure and have it approved by ya'll on TCS!

I'm assuming you already know that your cat is not lactose intolerant or at least that it doesn't bother him.... that's the first thing I thought with all that cheese and I know many cats have a problem with lactose.... unless you make them with lactose free stuff... let us know how they turn out and how they're accepted!!!

I hate to ask but then I am just a man, I see the ingredients but then what do you do with them? I'd like to try this on Persi, he likes cheese so much but I have no idea what to do with these ingredients. Just mix them up together? Make them into balls or something?. Put them in the fridge? Help an old man out!

3/4 cup (175 ml) all purpose flour
3/4 cup (175 ml) shredded cheddar cheese
5 tbsps (75ml) grated parmesan cheese
1/4 cup (60 ml) plain yogurt or sour cream
(add more if needed to form dough)
1/4 cup (60 ml) cornmeal

1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees Farenheit (180 degrees C).
2) Combine cheeses and yogurt.
3) Mix cornmeal with flour and add to cheese mixture.
4) Knead dough into a ball.
5) With a rolling pin, roll dough out on a lightly floured board.
6) Cut out treats with cutter and place on a greased cooking sheet. (cutter makes treats into 1/2" cubes, you can probably slice them just as easily)
7) Bake for 15-20 minutes
8) Cool to room temperature and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. May be frozen for longer storage. Bring to room temperature before serving.

There you have it! This book has quite a few other treat recipes if anybody else out there is interested. . .

Ferris, are there any recipes in the book for treats with tuna? My cat goes crazy whenever we have tuna sandwiches. If not, are there any lactose-free ones I can try? (I'm not sure if she's lactose intolerant)

Thanks!

I know this is old.

I found a recipe on youtube for tuna bites.  The recipe calls for tuna, oil, oats, egg and catnip.  Mix it all together.  Roll it out.  Then slice it into bite sizes and bake for 10 minutes (350).  Has anyone else tried this or know of a good sub for the oats?

True they don't.  But I used to feed them Temptations and they miss it.  I wonder if they'd like this but at the same time, I'm not sure it's a good idea to encourage them.  For now I do feed them a little canned tuna or chicken as a late night treat.
