My 1yo Calico, Cali, has for the past few days had a very perplexing problem. It all started two nights ago around 1am. She starts wailing in pain and hissing, and hobbles off, favoring her back left leg. She hides under the table and moans in pain. I didn't know what to do at the time, so I just stayed up with her. After about 10 minutes she seemed normal again and I went to sleep.

The next day she was completely normal, purring, playing and eating fine. Then again that night around 9pm she starts wailing in pain and limping on the same foot. Again within a few minutes her pain was gone and she was normal again, but I still grabbed her and took her to the vet that night.

We get to the vet and aside from the fact that she's scared of the new place, she acts normal and is not limping at all. The vet takes her back and proclaims he can find nothing wrong with her. He gives her a pain shot and sends us on our way (with a $135 bill to boot).

She was fine through the rest of the night, but this morning around 11am she starts to get in my lap and suddenly jumped away in pain and again begins crying. Here it is 11:25 and she's acting fine again, but I simply don't understand what is going on.

Cali is a polydactyl with 7 toes on each front paw and 5 toes on each hind paw. I asked the vet if she potentially had an ingrown toe nail, to which he said no.

Any ideas at all??

Do you have a video camera? It might help the vet make the diagnosis if they can see what's happening. Did the vet do x-rays or examine her? It could be a minor joint inflammation or something more chronic like luxating patellas. Unfortunately, a vet (preferably not an ER vet who is better at emergencies than chronic issues) is the only one who will be able to determine the problem.

Yea I have a video camera and if it happens again, I plan on recording it. Thanks.

Edit: From what I can tell, the pain seems to be emanating from the bottom of her foot.

Problem occured again tonight about an hour ago. I got it on tape, however my computer is not detecting the camcorder device and I am unable to transfer the file to my CPU.

She began acting very strange, as if she was uncomfortable (squirming around oddly in front of the fireplace). I coaxed her into standing up and she cried out in pain and limped away to a corner and plopped back down, moaning. Within a few minutes the pain was gone and she was normal again.

Each time it's the same hind left foot.

Did you or the vet check the bottom of her paw? Is it possible there is something stuck in or between her pads?

Hope I don't get kicked off the forum for saying this....but change vets!!!

The first vet I went to diagnosed my little P.J. (after $400 of tests, etc.) with diabetes. The tests were all for things that she had already been inocculated (spelling?) for.

Second vet said.....no signs of diabetes.....she had URI.....which is what I thought in the first place.

So....if this is not a vet you always go to....check around with other people...okay?

Am I in trouble people???

Well I only recently got the cat so she doesn't have a "regular" vet yet. However, since I took her to the vet late at night I had to go to one that was open 24hrs and is not a vet that I would normally choose.

So far she has not had another episode since yesterday. I did get information on a good vet to take her to if she continues to experience the episodes.

It's been almost 2 days now and she hasn't had the problem again. Here's hoping that the problem has resolved itself.

I guess we might not ever find out what it was...
