Was checking out the Feline Pine site, and saw this alert
: (Toxoplasmosis bacteria killing sea otters)

http://www.naturesearth.com/specialalert.html

Had actually seen a small news blurb a few weeks back...am surprised it hasen't made bigger headlines.

Dump instead of flush
...seems like a simple way to help keep Mother Earth clean & her critters safe

Well gee, I must be lucky cause NONE of the cats I've owned ever had Tox......you get it more from eating raw hamburger/meat....so maybe its not the cats fault; could it be people who are eating raw foods and pooping in the toilet???? Should coastal people start using a litter pan and putting their poop in the garbage????

I think its exagerated!

Maybe...and I don't think my cats have toxo, either, but
it's a small step for me to dump instead of flush,
so if it can possibly be better for the environment
, then I'll do it & encourage others to help as well
.

Here's another link from About.com that gives further explanation:

Do many cat owners even flush? I know I wouldn't want any litter clogging up my pipes, especially the clumbing stuff!! I bet it'd cement the whole system up!!

I also bet it is people with toxo that are causing this problem!

That really makes me sad. I never flush mine either; I never had a really specific reason other than general hygiene. Now I am so glad I have not flushed.

One article that I read said that although other animals and humans can be infected with the Toxoplasmosis supposedly only cats shed the Toxo in their feces so that's why the flushable litter is suspect. I have also seen other articles though that thought that there were other ways that the otters were being infected but most researchers still seem to feel that the cats are the source.
