I know this sounds crazy, but Cricket, my coal black cat, is shedding grayish white hair! I combed her good with a shedding blade and all the hair was very light gray. anybody else notice this with their black cats? or am I just nuts?

the stray that i caught is also coal black and for some reason when he sheds the hairs are grey. So you aren't going insane. Hopefully someone on this forum will have an answer since i am also interested in knowing why that is

I have a black cat too, and what happens is cats have the second layer of hair underneath, the undercoat, which often times is lighter, if not white, than the top coat. I also have a grey tiger cat and I pull grey hairs from him too. Its actually good that youre pulling the undercoat up, cuz thats often what causes allergies and all that shedding mess.

Margot is right on the dime, My oldest is also a jet black. He also sheds the same way, with the undercoat and as the hair dies and sheds it often loses pigment, hey ever see a zombie with gorgeous brunette locks lmao, nope heh heh that why.
