Two weeks ago Fang captured a mouse, brought it in the living room, put it down, it was still alive ran, recaptured. Long story short. I caught it and threw it out the front door, where, most likely it came right back into the basement. Last night Pansy was the hunter, I thought this one was just about shot, I threw it out the front door, and it wasn't there the next day, so I am thinking it may have come back in.

My concern is, I obviously have a bunch of mice in the basement, should I just let the cats kill them? Do you think these mice could have disease? Where would the disease come from if they live in my basement?
Should I kill them? How, that won't hurt the cats and really gross me out.

Do you think if I threw them in front of my neighbors house, they would run into her house instead of mine,
or do they return to their nest?

I don't know what I should do here. I mean this is one of the benefits of having a cat, is they take care of your mouse problem, but the kill is too slow, and I can't let them torture the mouse if I am there.

What do you do, or think?

the last time mine caught a mouse, raven killed it really quick. mike took it away as soon as he saw, but the mouse was already deceased. we had actually been trying to trap the mouse, but he kept outsmarting us. the cats worked the best.

do your cats go in your basement? sometimes if there is no smell of a cat that's how you can get mice. that happened to my parents when i was a teen--our cat had passed away and we got a mouse problem.

if it were me, i would let my cats "take care of it".
we had such rotten luck with traps, i don't have much faith in them. i won't have poison in the house.

Yeah, the cats have 24 hour access to the basement. go down every day. hunting, I presume

When we had mice briefly, I did catch one in a cheap humane trap I found at Wal-mart. But my sister's cat caught ... three, I think, maybe more. So apparently kitties are much more effective, much as I did NOT want her killing them that way. But a humane trap might be worth a try anyway, if you don't mind having to tote it off somewhere to release it.

I did use two humane traps a few years ago, when I noticed a mouse running under the basement door every morning, it was like another pet. My girls were so old, they would just waTCH,.
Anyhoo, I baited the trap and kept checking and it was always empty.

then after forgetting about it for a few months, I checked again and there were two petrified (as in dead) mice. Not so humane in my hands.

If you don't want to use a trap or can't let your cats have 24/7 access you can always get a sonic repellent. I have a Sharper Image Mouse Mover, which I bought after having a problem and knowing that my boys weren't going to be quick about doing something. It actually works - I haven't had a sighting in a year and when I first put it on I actually heard a mouse scream from the noise!
