USD & CAD Exchange Rate

The Canadian dollar is worth $.94 US now! When we moved here five years ago, $1.00 CAD = $.64 USD. I wonder if they will become equal. Certainly it's not good for Victoria BC tourism - not such a great deal anymore for U.S. tourists.

I remember when the Canadian Dollar was worth 1.05 US!!! That was back in 1978.

Canada has a strong economy and our dollar is thriving. I won't go into why the US one isn't *coughs* war *coughs*

Ha ha ha, so subtle! When we moved here, it was very bad to have American debt so we paid off my school loans asap.

They say by the end of the year they should be on par - not good IMO for business or tourism. Then add in the need for a passport.....

Coming from Europe, I have never seen what the big deal is about getting a passport, but at least they have decided that as long as you can prove citizenship, they will allow air travel until September seen as the passport agency is so backlogged

With the rate of the Loonie, it wouldn't be a surprise to see them equal before the end of the year, again not great for Canadian Tourism

As you know, I just returned from British Columbia and stayed just a couple of blocks from you. When it came to buying things, I could not tell that I was in Canada at all based on the prices I paid for things. When I was a little boy (a long time ago) I grew up in Bellingham, near the border, and Canadian coins were equally interchanged. If you bought something for fifty cents you might get a Canadian and a US coin in change and nobody thought anything about it. Not so long ago the Euro and US dollar almost had the same value and you could spend dollars or Euros and receive mixed change also. Things are quite a bit different now. I would not be surprised if in the near future Canadian and US money will be treated equally again.

So true, however I still pay 2x as much for a magazine compared to Americans...buying the exact same car across the border will still save me thousands of dollars....prices havnt done anything to reflect the gaining canadian dollar, and thats a little annoying....

I really notice it with the price of books (as I buy that more then anything). It is ridiculous the price difference in books when the dollar is now so close.

DW ran out of things to read and on our trip back she spied a book at the Vancouver airport. I showed her the two different prices on the cover and she decided she could wait until we got back to the Dallas airport to buy the book.

Wow! I didn't think I would see the day!

Hmmm...I guess I'll be gambling on the U.S. border instead of at Windsor
