I appreciate the help that everyone tried to give me today....from the bottom of my heart.

The only problem I have with this site...is that I do not know who is experienced or who is just giving opinions.

I do know how much I appreciate all those who really want to help.....but, after spending hours on the computer today.....with this site....I ended up totally confused again.

Many people gave suggestions and I was ready to jump right into their suggestions, and then, I would read that the things that were suggested were not good or did not work...or were dangerous.

I was only asking for home remedies...and I am sure some of them worked for some people and for others did not.....

All I know is that I just put salt all over my carpets and the last post I received was that it could harm my cats.....and then....went online to order Borax...and someone said....don't use it.

I give up....thanks again....but....I just don't know how experienced some of the people who are telling me not to do things are and they are dangerous are....and, at this point, I am afraid to do anything.

Even vets make mistakes.....like telling me my cat had diabetes....and I find out later that was not true.

So....guess I just don't know what else to do..... I take advice and someone else says....don't do it!

Sorry if I am negative....but I truly do give up.

thank you all for everything....but...don't see the point in asking anymore.

God bless you all for trying.

Don't worry about it.....this is entirely my fault.....you are right...I do not know who is giving me the advice....unless I check all the profiles and I don't have time for that. As my first post said, I HAVE talked to the vet and was only looking for "home remedies", but honestly, and really honestly, I saw more people disagreeing with someone else's advice...than helping...and that is not why I was here. A few people have really helped and I will keep in touch with them privately.

I will not bother you people anymore.....so no need to reply to this post.

Thanks.

I thought this was important enough to post here, hopefully you get this.

Toomany,

I'm sorry you are feeling so down, it is definitely coming out in your posts. No one here is purposely trying to hurt you and I hope you can see that if you are even still coming to this site. You keep mentioning that you are done with this site and it is a real shame. This site has so many people who all love cats, we all come from different backgrounds and experiences and this is what makes us able to help each other. everyone here has offered advice to the best of their experiences to help you make informed decisions. And it looks as if you took many peoples' advice and sought further information to validate it, which is good because yes, you DON'T know everyone's background.

many many people here own multiple cats, myself included and some even own 8 or more. you needed immediate help so those particular who have been in some similar situations may not have been right there to reply, but the rest of us tried. As I read, I think there were only two comments mentioning seeing a vet and they were just trying to help. Unfortunately is isn't the help/advice you were looking for. I'm glad though that there were some real intuitive thoughts going on to help you.

I hope you continue to visit the site to receive support and advice as we are all cat lovers. You mentioned before that you have 16 aging cats. We are all here to give you support through the tough times that are inevitably ahead.

Please don't think that just because posters haven't been here as long as you or don't have as many cats as you aren't serious cat lovers.

we are, and care.

I posted this in your other thread but /I wanted to make sure you see this:

TooMany: Where in Jax. are you?

As for the borax Iknow up here Wal-Mart and other major stores sell it but its sold in the insectide bug spray area. Also Big Lots and Dollar General/ Family dollar should sale it as well.

Also a fine tooth comb or nit comb will help. Use that to comb the kitty and have a bowl of dawn dish soap and water beside you to dip the comb in to kill the fleas.

TO RENOVIA....

Oh my sweet Lord....you were a Godsent....I was so depressed and getting to close down for the evening.....still need to....am an old lady and go to bed early!!

Anyway....I took a "quick"?? look at your home page and (I hope I won't get kicked off the forum for saying this) had to go change my shorts!!!!

I don't have time to look at all of it tonight, but put it on my favorites.

I needed something like that so much.

I had a Russian Blue 10 years ago...and looked like Stoli.

I watched the video with the new brother....the dishwasher, etc. I haven't laughed that much in so long. Your husband?....was so calm as both cats interefered with him unloading....I loved the comment...."everybody with more than 2 legs...out of here".

So funny....thank you so much....I will check it out more tomorrow when I feel better.

Have to go clean litter boxes and hug many, many kitties.

too,

Not sure about your thread but we have a lab and 2 indoor cats. Our dog has been treated for fleas (we use BioSpot) and she's never brought in any fleas to the cats (so they've never been treated).

Sorry to hear about your problems. What flea preventative are you using on the dog? Maybe you need to treat the lawn for fleas too.

Honestly I have searched and SEARCHED for other sites as good as this one in the past. Then i stopped and just stuck with this one. Occasionally I have come across a few other decent ones when I do still look, but i always choose TCS as the best because of the fact that there are SO MANY people. Sure you could go to a site with just a handful of people who all think alike and agree on every single thing. But that is not only boring but you don't get to hear others experiences and learn what others do for similar problems. I agree that sometimes one person will tell you one thing that they do that works wonderfully and another person will say it is not a good way and dangerous. You just have to pick and choose what sounds right to you but that way you will have all sorts of ideas and opinions to figure out. Most of the time there isn't one straight right or wrong answer.

Anyways, please don't leave! I always wait for a number of responses before I take someones advice. Or see what advice is repeated by multiple people. Also you can go by posts too, sometimes (no offense) I am more likely to take the advice from longer members then brand new people. But just be thankful that we are trying I guess. We all want what is best for your kitties and it is hard to express that sometimes."Anyways, please don't leave! I always wait for a number of responses before I take someones advice. Like any home remedy, whether it's for your cats, you, or your plants, you need to research it before you try it. You got plenty of advice - for things that were repeated - do a search on them on google and see what comes up. If anything says it's potentially dangerous. Canned pumpkin and boiled chicken and rice are definitely recommended and safe.

Definitely no need to threaten to leave - everyone is just trying to help, but we're not experts - we're just going by personal experience, and nobody would recommend anything they thought wasn't safe

Hope your boy is doing better tonight!

I am sorry to read that you are so confused.

For the Borax I am the one who suggested it. The type you want is in the laundry isle, it should never be with pesticides. It is NOT a pesticide. It is safe to use. I called the company and spoke with a rep before I used it. It is an old school remody. I found out about from my 80 year old mother in law. From what the rep said your cat would need to ingest pounds of it to be fatal or even harmful. You will never use that many. Thats why they say to sweep it into the carpet and vacumm after. I read your post about it in th eother thread. I found it at my local grocery store, Ralphs. I know Vons sells it as well. Ralphs is a Kroger company and Vons is Safeway.
Here is the link to Borax. They should also have a store locator on the site.
http://www.purex.com/index.cfm?page_id=56

From their site http://www.purex.com/index.cfm?page_id=21
Q. Is 20 Mule Team® safe to use around my pets?
A. 20 Mule Team® Borax is non-toxic, but if ingested in large quantities, it has the potential to cause negative effects. If ingested in large quantities, contact a veterinarian immediately.
\t

Please don't leave. The whole point is to take in as much info as you can and use what works for you. I really hope to see you around the site.

I want to say that I'm no expert in anything, I only have 2 cats, and they're not older cats. I also don't have problems with fleas. I don't know if this product has been mentioned, but I bought some once on a recommendation when I decided I didn't want to put the pesticides on my indoor cats anymore. I haven't used it because I haven't had a flea problem. I did research it as much as I could, and it seems safe enough.

Good luck, and please take heart. You are an angel for rescuing all of those cats.

Jen...no offense taken...because I am fairly new on this forum....and have been on another one for 4 years...just liked this one better.

And....(no offense meant), have been taking care of stray cats for 20 years (finally stopped taking them in)....so feel I do have some experience.....rather than the amount of time I have been on a forum.

I just reach out for advice that I may have missed...and boy....did I learn lots in the last 2 days. I will be posting on this.

Too many

To quote myself here....

I just wanted to rephrase that, I reread what I wrote and I sound sort of snobby I think. I don't mean I only listen to what certain people have to say, I am just pointing out not to take the first persons advice that responds, wait a little for multiple responses and figure out what you would like to try. That is what I do and that is what I meant by waiting for a certain number of responses.

Where whiskers abound.
Since Borax is mentioned in this thread, I have to tell of my own experience with it. No, I am not an expert, just a cat lover-love cats. Out of being desperate I used the Borax Laundry Booster, put it into a glass jar and poked holes in the lid and sprinkled it all over the carpets. One box was enough. I keep a second box in storage. Let the Borax stay in the carpet for two days and then vacumed.

I don't use Frontline anymore, cats don't like it; I have two applications sitting unused. The cats are indoor only, like you, only the dog goes out. I use apple-cider vinegar in a small spray bottle and spray the cats once a week or when I see them scratch- fleas hate the smell of vinegar, and fleas don't get immune to vinegar. I don't soak the cats, just a squirt on their backs. I have no fleas.

Now, the dog gets a once a week application of Tea Tree (which is poison to cats, do not use on cats) I put the Tea Tree on the dog like I used to with the Frontline-neck, tail area. I don't put a lot, just a dab about once a week or so. I have no fleas.

I have had tons of fleas in the past and wish I did more research then. I really hated using the Frontline on my pets, just think, how can it be not poisonous if it keeps fleas away for a whole month, my cats would hide and I would not see them until the next day-I am guessing they hid while the Frontline was sinking into their sensitive systems and poisoning them slowly.

We here love, love out cats and just want the best for them.. I have also switched to Wellness canned food because of TCS and my cats are so happy now, now, if I can only get my oldest not to be mean to my younger one I will be all set.

Here we go again....I just ordered Advantage...and now, even though the vet recommended it, you think it HARMS the cat?

Let's research this online with vets before we scare people, okay?

I know its hard when there are many opinions floating around. If you and your vet feel safe using Advantage then use it. Some people are more leary of putting chemicals on their animals. I am oneof those even though I am currently using some chemicals as needed. But I am researching moving towards using organic and natural remedies for repeling the fleas instead of putting chemicals on them intended to kill insects.

At any rate.If you and your vet are comfortable using the Advantage then by all means do so.

No, No....I am really NOT comfortable putting those "chemicals" on my older cats....and, as we all know, there are many vets who recommend it...I am sorry to say, but we all know it, b/c they get a profit.

I have tried natural and organic products....and nothing helps...and in the meantime, my cats are miserable and getting tapeworms, bad skin, etc., from these fleas.

Good luck with the other alternatives...and PLEASE let me know when you find what works. Thank you.

I have heard a few but I would have to look some of them back up. One being taking a lemon quater it. If a large pot of water boiling. Once it boils turn off heat and drop the quaters in. Let sit over night. In the moring remove the quaters and strain the luquid to remove the pulp. Use this liquid but taking a clothe and rubbing the luquid on the cats. Fleas don't like the smell of lemon (so I have read). But that will not take care of the fleas already in the house or yard. For that I would use D-Earth human/food grade (as someone mentioned in another thread).

Around the bend!
I was told once that oranges work wonders for fleas. After you peel an orange, take the skin and smush it in half and rub the juice on your cat. Needless to say, my cat hated me for awhile after that but boy did he smell good! (By the way, did nothing for the fleas. LOL) Now, I have a multi-cat household and we get loads of fleas. I use Advantage once and that's it. I start flea season with the food grade d/e. I apply it to my floors once a week but not to my cats as some have breathing problems and I'm afraid of what it'd do to them. As soon as I see fleas on the cats, I use one application of Advantage. More times then not that's all it takes. Unless it's stinking hot out and the fleas go bonkers then I'll re-apply 2 months later instead of the very next month. So far, it's worked out here.

I hope your flea problem and Pubs poo problem both clear up!
