Were the same as Australia Sarah for that word.

I remember the first time I heard the theme song to `The Nanny'... the line `she was out on her fanny!'. I just about died!

And we use it as a nicer term for the posterior. Isn't that strange that it means so many different things?

I'm afraid, however, that without the benefit of a master list of words that have offensive meanings by country, there will always be a risk of someone getting offended at something that was not posted with any intention or awareness that it MAY be found offensive.

Then again, there are those that just have no class and have no regard for others.
(Says the biker chick with no class but LOTS of regard for others.

I only read maybe 1% of the posts here and I didn't really see a problem. If I did I reported it. But I'm having a problem with the auto-censor. As this thread shows, there are ways to work around it but it saddens me to see a post "fixed" when someone is talking about her lovely c o c k atoo and it is branded as a offensive post or someone innocently talks about his cat freak ing out on catnip and again it looks like some porno post.

I understand the mods and Anne have their reasons, it just rubs me wrong.

I think, for me, that it depends on what I've said and how it might have offended someone. If someone was offended because we hold diametrically opposing viewpoints, then yes, I'd still probably say it again -- just because someone may or may not agree with my opinions doesn't mean I'm going to keep quiet about it (especially not in the IMO forum). However, I'd like to think that we're all intelligent and compassionate enough on TCS to understand that while we might have opposing views, that doesn't mean that we can't be friends and that we shouldn't all be entitled to holding differing opinions. (Okay, that was a bit rambling, but hopefully you get the gist of it.
)

However, I try not to use offensive language, so I'm already trying to be respectful of peoples' feelings and of the fact that TCS is a family-friendly site. (I do occasionally forget that certain words, while acceptable in one culture, may not necessarily be acceptable in others, however. And I really should know better ...) I like the
smiley, and I like making up swear words, so it's not much of a hardship to be self-censoring.

The mods really do do an excellent job in keeping things clean and friendly, though -- I haven't seen any examples of bad language in any of the forums.
(I'm actually a bit disappointed that I appear to have missed all the offensive posts.
Alas.)

I would have never started this thread, if I knew there was going to be one started in the Cat Lounge as well. I *think* I started this one like half an hour before the other one... maybe we should connect the two into the same thread?

To bitch (use as a verb) about something is to complain about it. I do NOT see that as profane, but I am sure that many others do.

If you say someone is BEING one, then yes, I see that as a swear.

Fricking is a replacement for that OTHER F word, and I personally see this as more offensive than freak-ing, but I guess it is a matter of individual perception.

And crap being a bad word is just crap, as far as I'm concerned. We all know what it means - should we use poop instead? I think that is just nitpicking. Poop HAPPENS, can we just accept that and not be offended by it?

I mean, c'mon, folks. The word refrigerator was actually censored the other day, and the only time that is a bad word is when you are on a diet.

I don't see any problem with any word being said, but this is a family site (isn't it?). Anyway, I don't care if I see crap, freak ing, or fricking. But when I see B**ch, Sl*t or any word like that.... that's insulting!

Note: I do know the mods work really hard keeping this site going, and I'm not complaining about the mods. Just so this is understood

Just one question: If this were a DOG owner forum instead of a cat owner forum, would the word bitch still be considered offensive to you? After all, the REAL definition is a female dog.

CONTEXT MATTERS.

Why was refrigerator censored? Because it has the word f r i g in it?

I belong to a dog forum, and no, the word "bitch" isn't censored. We use it quite a lot.

No, I am not offended at all if you use the word. When you are referring to a particular person as a B*tch then that's insulting!

I agree with you there 100%.
Just had to ask.

Personally, I'm glad you posted this thread. I am enjoying this discussion, and have already learned a couple of interesting things about what words I should try to avoid and why. So thanks!
