Sorry to repeat myself guys, but I just wanted to post in both places, just in case:

My mother has taken in a kitten that was left by the mother. Upon some testing, the cat has been found to be FIV+. She does not want to euthanize it, but does not want to keep it, because she has another cat that she is very close to and doesn't want to increase the chance of infection. Where should I look for places that will take the kitten? I don't know if the humane society takes FIV+ cats, since they are sick... I just need to give her some places that will take her. We live in Michigan, if that helps.

Thanks, guys... take care.

Rene and I were just discussing this whole thing. FIV cats will be put down at a pound or humane society. If you really have to look, try looking for the non profit guys. Try putting an ad in the local paper with the story and that it needs to go to an only cat home.
On the other side, this was just the discussion. FIV can really only be transmitted through blood& sex really. If neither is an aggressive cat the chances are very slim to none than another cat will get it. FIV is harder to get than FELV. I really hope this kitten does not get put down.

Frogsy,

How old is the kitten? When was it tested? Was it a stick test or an IFA test ImmunoFlourescentAntibody test. I had a cat that first tested positive at 11 weeks old. My former vet was ready to euthanize her that very day. I finally got a second opinion and had an IFA test done. Lo and behold it was negative. Please have her tested again to take away any doubt you may have. If it still comes back positive then you need to decide what to do. But until then you need to keep the kitten separate from you mom's other cats.

Unfortunately if you take the kitten to the Humane Society they will euthanize it in a heartbeat. Do you have any friend that have no other cats in their home? Maybe one of them would be willing to take it. Please keep us posted.
