Registering to be a bone marrow donor is very quick and easy - it just requires a cheek swab and I believe can be done anywhere that takes blood donations. They keep the results on a database, and they can cross reference those needing bone marrow or blood cell transplants against all their donors.
It's incredibly hard to find a close enough match to be successful, and if you DO get the call saying you're a match with someone, you literally are helping save someone's life.
I believe if you are needed for a donation it can be a little painful, but it's nothing compared to the pain the person needing the donation has probably been through!
Go to http://www.marrow.org/ for more information, and I strongly urge everyone to go and get on their registry!
