Yikes!!! Remind me not to go to dentists in your area (j/k :lol3).

I'm a big fat chicken when it comes to pain. I was sedated for my wisdom teeth and my first-year molars(they had to be removed to make more room in my mouth before I could get braces).

The first year molars incident nearly traumatized me. They tried the local first, waited 5 minutes with me on it. I remember half dreaming something with Pee-Wee's playhouse.

Anyways, the instant I saw the needle and the plyers, I snapped out of my dream state and refused to open my mouth. My mom yelled at them because they were suppose to completely sedate me.

I had a tooth pulled in December, i had novacaine, but i worked myself into a frenzy anyway. It did not hurt but I started bawling, it only took like 10 seconds to actually pull the tooth, and it took me 10 minutes to calm down. The tugging and yanking is what gets me. I like the idea of sedation dentistry but it seems like the down time would be alot longer.

I had my top wisdom teeth dug out, and the second molars were harmed by them so they all needed to be removed! I had a bad experience with my bottom widom teeth being taken out (got a dry socket and the bottom right on my jaw was numb for 2 months because the doc bumped a nerve). When I was like 6 they numbed my mouth so much, I couldn't feel my lips for 2 days. I bit them all up trying to feel them!

I was fine, but they day of the surgery I got nervous. I took a valium which made me feel like I had a drunk buzz, and was put under. I woke up and rested on ice that whole day! Thankfully, its all done now!

I have had a few pulled including wisdom teeth without being sedated. My first wisdom they had to break in to bits and pull out.

Didn't feel a thing. My dentist told me I had the longest root she had ever seen in her 25 year career. lol.

A good dentist knows where to put the novicane so you don't feel it. The last tooth I got pulled I was in shock when they told me they were done. "That's it?" I said. So There ya go.

If I didn't trust my dentist, I wouldn't go to them.

Good luck to ya.

Actually local anesthetic means a shot of novacaine in the area they want to numb.
Being sedated means.... GAS ME!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, I know. I made a typo. Sorry about that. General anesthetic is putting you to "sleep". Local is freezing the area.

You'l have to find an oral surgeon if you want to be put out. General dentists aren't certified for that generally.

My dentist is my dad, if that answers the question about being afraid!

I was a complete dentistphobe until I found my new dentist here in Edmonton.
It was DEFINATELY an anxiety thing, Im prone to anxiety as it is, so going to the Dentist was a terrrible terrible time for me. Now rewind a bit, Im SURE I hate the dentist because of my childhood experiences - a few teeth pulled painfully etc. Fast-forward: I call up scouting for a new dentist, and make an appointment with one close to my house. I discuss with their receptionist how I havnt been a couple years, and would prefer to never come again etc etc. She laughs, tells me everything will be fine. I show up, meet my dentist, and his hygenist....long story short, I am not dentistphobic anymore, and 2 cavities flanking a root canal caused me absolutely no pain.
My point is, in the 15-20 yrs since I was a child conditioning my fear of the dentist, the tools, anaesthetics, and training were all nowhere near what they are today.
Finer guage needles, better topical anaesthetics, more delicate instrumentation has made the dentist a lot less painful/loud than I remembered (turns out following this realization, many people I spoke to agreed...so if you are remembering an extraction/experience from even 5 yrs ago, take heart- its NOT going to be as bad)
A bit more detail to the long story short mentioned above: Turns out they gave me the childrens dentist/hygenist combo. A "team" used in that dental office for difficult children etc. They claim this dentist has never had a patient remain unruly in his chair. And I dont doubt it. A nice tv to watch, friendliness, calm demeanor etc made ALL the difference in the world...

On another note it is of my opinion that a simple dental procedure isnt ever worth the risks of general anaesthesia. I understand anxiety etc. can be overwhelming, but please dont risk your life for fear of the dentist.

I used to hate going to the dentist, luckly (or unluckly) for me I inherited my biological moms bad teeth, her, my sister and I never developed the hard enamal so our teeth were too soft, we all have dentures so I don't have to go to the dentist anymore.

I love going to the dentist, but I've never had any bad experiences.

No fillings or anything, only had 4 baby teeth pulled out because there were no adult teeth underneath (runs in the family) then had braces on to close up the gaps.

I know a lot of dentists that are certified to have nitrous at their offices including the one I work for and they are all genreal dentists. They just have to be certified. Now to do GENERAL anesthesia, you have to be an oral surgeon but not for nitrous oxide(aka laughing gas)

Anyways, I'm sorry that your office won't sedate you. It will all be okay though.
