Am I Being Paranoid?

Hey everyone. I posted a few weeks ago about Audrey's sudden increase in appetite. At this point she's up to nearly 10 oz of Wellness a day (she's about 11 pounds, and very active for an indoor cat) from about 6oz a day when we were still transitioning her (she would eat endless dry food, it seemed, but left behind most of the wet).

I ended up calling the vet about her increase in appetite, but was told not to worry. I can't quite shake it, though, since Audrey seems to be getting plenty of food, but still begs for more whenever we go into the kitchen. Maybe she's just greedy, but it's still weird.

Added to that, I just noticed that her belly is very taut. I've never had a cat before, so I don't know if this is normal or not. It's not hard (it will give with a bit of pressure), but it's definitely not soft or pliable.

Lastly, she was spayed about a month ago with no complications, but I just found a small, hard lump right to the side of where the incision was. It doesn't feel warm or swollen, and doesn't cause her any pain when I press it. I can't tell if it's just where the muscle is still knitting back together, or if it's something more.

Aside from these issues, she's fine. Same activity level, no personality changes, using her litterbox regularly.

So what do you think? Am I being paranoid, or is it worth calling the vet back again and being more insistent?

You aren't being paranoid at all! Just a concerned kitty parent

I would give your vet a call. It can't hurt

She's about a year and a half, we think.

I'm less concerned about the quantity that she's eating than I am about the sudden increase. 6oz to 10oz is 66% increase and it seemed to happen overnight. Everywhere I look it says that a sudden change in appetite can be cause for concern, but when I called I was just told not to worry. (BTW, she was treated for tape worms at the same time as she was spayed; she must have picked them up before we adopted her).

I guess it's these added issues that are making me more concerned. Good grief, I'm so used to growing up with a dog around and instinctively knowing the moment something was even the slightest bit wrong. I haven't learned how to speak cat yet.

That's a lot more than my 11lb girl eats...but it can be in the range of what is normal if she's very active and/or has a faster metabolism.

I think I would call the vet. The increased appetite could just be increased enthusiasm about the food, as I know you had a little bit of trouble getting her off the dry...but with the other issues you're seeing I would make an appointment.

Hah, you've been dealing with me stressing over this for a while, beandip. I appreciated the continued feedback. I'd thought we'd dealt with it after speaking with the vet, but now I'm worried again.

Thanks for the support.

Don't feel bad, I find a kitty issue to stress over every day. The vet is in my speed dial.
Let us know how it goes.

Roxie also has a small hard lump around where her incision was. When we brought her to the vet for her check up we mentioned it and he felt it and said it was either scar tissue that developed or a piece of the stitch that never dissolved. I don't think it's an issue and you shouldn't worry about it but mention it to your vet at your next visit for reassurance.

Everyone here is a worried meowmy don't feel bad
