Most everyone with a full bred cat has a cat that was at one time a new breed. The difference is the outrageous price on this one and the possibility of this being a dangerous combination of wild genes.

I am against people just creating new breeds for money. Unscrupulous breeders are out there in every animal. However, we would not have many cats at all, if we were against professional breeders and all new breeds.

Think about the roots of your pure bred cat. Some were new breeds hundreds of years ago and some were new breeds within the last 30 years.

The key is to speak up against people just trying to profit off the lives of animals.

I can't seem to find any real information on it. All the information I've found on the net just says that it's a cross between the Serval, ALC, and a house cat.. I wasn't even able to find what breed of house cat they were crossing it with. They're beautiful cats. I really hope that we're able to see what comes of the breed. I'm definitely not in the market for a cat that expensive and particularly before the breed is ... well... tested for lack of a better word, and any health conditions or potential wild traits are better known. I will say, however, that I would be interested, later on, when it's more established.

Was that to me?? I just meant that for $22000 i'd expect triple grand champion lines, or some proof that they weren't just ripping me off with a cat that didn't fully fit the breed type. Although $22000 is a REDICULOUS amount of money to pay for a cat. Sure, shelter cats may not give people with more money than sense something to show off to their friends, but they'd love you just as much.

Oh, that wasn't specifically to anyone. I was just reminding people that all breeds started somewhere. This looks more like a rip off to me - we agree.

And I TOTALLY agree about shelter cats.

When you start a "breed", you really don't have a "breed" till you have a standard and the cats are conforming to the standard on a consistant basis.....

Call it what you want; its a designer breed and someone is gonna be seriously hurt. Imagine trying to control a 30 lb wild cat who decides he/she is NOT a house pet!

I think we all agree on this.

This "new" breed is nothing more than a Savannah, which is itself a new breed.

Think about it. Most Savannah's are produced using a bengal cat and an african serval.

Bengal cat= Asian Leopard Cat blood and domestic blood.

Savannah cat= African Serval, ALC and domestic blood.

Ashera= African serval, ALC and domestic blood.

How is this a new breed??? These people are on crack.

Well it depends on how big the Servals in the lineage are. F1 Savannah's are usually pretty big. 30 pounds wouldn't be unusual.

Male serval's run up to 45 pounds. I think having a 25 pound Savannah on average is the very possible.

Also have to keep in mind that the Asian Leopard Cat is a tiny cat. Average weight is 7 to 8 pounds. Lots of people are under the misconception that bengals get their size from the ALC. Bengals are average sized cats.

All the size in the Savannah is coming from the serval.

The Bengal is not an allowable outcross for the Savannah, right? I know some probably do it anyway, but I don't think it is in the standard as allowable.

I agree that this is, basically, a Savannah, though.

According to TICA no it's not. Here's a link to a Savannah site that details which cats were used, bengals among them.

In TICA, you can use a non-allowable outcross, bring that outcross back to allowable, and after 3 generations of allowable, the cat can be registered and shown in championship. I guess this is how some used the Bengal, since it is not an allowable outcross.
