I recently brought home an adorable new kitten, about eight weeks old. Everything has been going fine for the past week, but then this afternoon she started scratching her ear and then violently shook her head. A pile of scabs fell out on my bed, so I took her to my mom's room, where as soon as she twitched her head, another huge scab fell out. Both times they came out of her right ear, and together were probably enough to have completely filled her ear canal, so my mom went to clean it with a Q-tip. Punkin was cooperative but mewed a little. Her ear was clean, but bleeding slightly. I checked on her again a few minutes ago and her right ear looks perfectly fine, but her left ear now has a buildup of what looks like dried blood encrusting her ear canal. Does anyone know what can cause this, and if so if it's transferrable to people (she sleeps with me) and how to cure it? I appreciate any help.

I would say it's probably earmites. Humans can't get them and they drive kittens crazy. Imagine having bugs in your ears! If you haven't had it to the vet,now is the time to go.

Thanks a bunch! I have three existing outdoor cats who have hardly had any contact with her...should I still have them checked out as well just in case?

If they are outdoor kitty's,then I'd say yes,get them all checked. Just a few minutes together can be all it takes. If you can't take them in all at once, just ask your vet when you take the little one in. They will usually give you the meds you need to treat them just in case. Of course,it's better if the vet can test them all! Good luck and by the way, welcome to The Cat Site!!!
