I just noticed a few 9 Lives and Friskies canned cat food has wheat gluten as an added ingredient, and since we know the contamination had not been solved, I read it's best not to feed cats anything with wheat gluten or rice protein concentrate as an ingredient.

They werent on the recall, but just to be sure I dont think buying these certain flavors is a good idea.

My cats ate these flavors for a few years, but for now were going to avoid these flavors.

I dont know if that is sarcasm or your saying shelf food is safe now, BUT I have seen recalled food still on the shelves of some stores, so IMO its not that safe out here.

Their are others too, many fancy feast flavors and proplan flavors also contain wheat gluten, as does some whiskas.

However all that said i do make the personal choice to use products that do contain wheat gluten, since my cats have zero interest in any wet food that doesn't contain it.

I think it's one of those things that everyone has to decide what they feel most comfortable with and to be sure to keep themselves up to date on the latest info on recalls.

Ferris prefers one of the Meow Mix flavors (chicken & liver) that has wheat gluten in it, and it is not one of the recalled brands. He is a healthy little horse, I mean cat, and I see no reason to not feed it to him.

I refuse to become victim to paranoia.

I do not see myself as a victim of paranoia. I figured since so many of the meow mix pouches do not have wheat gluten, Seb can survive without the few flavors that do. I don't usually overreact to anything but in this case I am ok with being cautious. Just me of course.

i use several friskies flavors with wheat gluten, a couple meow mix, and a couple fancy feast flavors. we haven't had any issues with these. i did stop feeding them when the recalls came out, before they tested their foods. it's been 2 months, the foods have been tested, and i have confidence in their foods again. plus, my cats started going off their food when they didn't get their friskies in gravy for breakfast.

I buy the Friskies canned. But I read the lables first - the beef ones don't have it. But the chicken and turkey ones do, so I don't get them. We will give the cats boiled chicken breast instead.

9lives is gross anyway. It makes coats greasy and stinky in my personal experience with Zissou and the other cats in the family. Soon as I stopped feeding it to her her coat went back to the non-stinky soft fur she always had.

I don't consider myself paranoid, and I will not feed any wet food with any grain in it until this is figured out. Things were being added to the recall for months, as recently as a couple weeks ago.

OK, obviously some folks are taking my comment about my own opinion personally, so let me rephrase that: I refuse to fall victim to FEAR.

If I allowed myself to let fear dictate how I eat, drink and live my life, I'd be a starving hermit unable to leave the house.

I'm going to continue to place trust in the companies that I buy my cat foods from, rather than be afraid of single ingredients because of the tainted ingredients that were included in cat foods that have since been recalled.

What happened was terrible and sad and horrifying and unfortunate, but cats have eaten foods that included wheat gluten in them for YEARS with no ill effects. Wheat gluten by itself is not the culprit, the chemical ADDITIVES are.

I still eat spinach and peanut butter and beef, and there have been recalls on those foods in the past. I didn't stop buying any and all products that have ever had those foods in them.

So based upon that alone, I cannot in good conscience boycott all cat foods based upon a single ingredient contained within. I refuse to be afraid - I take good care of my furbabies, and I have to move forward with the faith that what I feed them will allow them to thrive.

If I had experienced the death of a cat as a result of the tainted foods, I very well may have a different outlook on this, so I do NOT judge anyone who chooses to avoid the gluten.

I agree with you for the most part. However, to me this is different because a) it involves pet food, which is way less regulated and tracked than human food, b) Zissou has no choice but to eat what I feed her, and will eat whatever I give her with no "hm, this tastes a little funny" and c) the extent to which ingredients were contaminated and how widespread the contamination was.

In other words, if it was comparable to the spinach recall, where it was immediately recalled, every single package that might be affected was off sale very quickly, the problem was solved, and the product was back in the store quickly.

On the other hand, the companies sat on this for months, recalled a few things, lied, recalled a few more, lied some more, and eventually a large amount of food in every single type of food was recalled. These products are still not back on the shelf yet.

Pet food companies have proven that we can't trust them. So I won't.

But recents reports have stated that the FDA reported that they cannot and do not closely monitor the foods being imported into the US for human consumption. So it is not a completely true statement that pet foods are any better regulated due to the FDA's inability to regulate and monitor human foods.

In addition, I just read this morning that Peter Pan PB is STILL on the shelves and that at least 200 more people have been sickened as a result of eating that brand's PB.

So I personally DO see it as comperable.

It's all a crapshoot. Breathing can be dangerous, too.

But, some then else to add wasn’t this melamine intentionally added to spike up the protein content, that’s pretty darn dirty? Or maybe I’m wrong, so feel free to correct me if I am.

As far as I’m aware or at least with the recent contamination in human food products it wasn’t done on purpose.

It IS darn dirty, but the pet food companies themselves were victims, as it was their VENDOR that provided them with the spiked gluten.

This is another reason I'm not blaming the pet food companies - they were trusting their vendor, and their vendor is the entity that is at fault here, IMO.

I feel very much the same. If we were to react to everything that is supposedly bad for our health, we would have stopped eating pretty much everything by now. I think we must just use common sense and not over-react.

I just heard on the news that a Chinese man was sentenced to death for taking bribes and passing unsafe drugs that were proven to kill some people.

This was touched upon on the news this morning too. Apparently in China, the people have no idea of the ingredients that are and could be in the food they are eating. We in North America expose these things publicly, but those folks are kept in total ignorance.

The vendor certainly is the one to blame IMHO. If you bought some flour at the store to make a cake and that cake turned out to have poison in it that affected your family, is the fault yours for using that flour to make your cake even though you had no idea what was in that flour or is it the fault of the folks that milled that flour and put it into the marketplace?

I know that right after the recall some of the food we had here at the house had wheat gluten in it. And no matter who hard a tried to avoid it some how I always ended up with a can or more that had wheat gluten in it. I know that not all brands that have wheat gluten in it is contaminated but honestly why take the chance if you don't have to. That is unless your cat will only eat that particular brand. If that is the case you have to do what you have to do.

I don't see switching brands after the recall as being a victim of parnoia or fear. I tried and tried and tried to feed he what he had always been on but found I could not do it. i kept thinking what if the food I was feeding gets recalled because of the gluten issue? How could I as an owner live with myself if I continued to feed this and something happened to him because of it. It was then that I could not fight the feelings I was feeling and decided to switch to a grain free dry and canned food. I could not deal with the what ifs anymore.

Now I am not saying anything about anyone that didn't switched. Thats fine if you feel comfortable with what you feed. I just could no longer do it.

For the record the previous food was Fancy Feast.

I'd just like to point out to you that you made that decision based upon fear of the unknown, a "what if" scenario. These "feelings" that you describe are, in fact, fear.

I'm not judging you for that, but I think that you need to accept that fear is what drove you to make that judgement call. Which is OKAY, because that is your choice.
