A friend of mine is looking for a cat. His girlfriend just moved out with their young son and his cat, Jasper, is taking it very hard. On top of that, about 6 months ago, their other cat escaped during a home invasion (they've since moved) and was never found. So, the poor little guy has lost his two best friends. My friend has to work full time to swing the rent and bills on his own, so Jasper is alone much more than he was before. Jasper has even started to lose weight from the stress!

He is looking for an adult female because Jasper has responded better to females than males in the past (he's fostered a few cats over the years). He would like her to already be spayed and up to date on shots because he can't afford the first year kitten stuff right now and strongly feels it is irresponsible to have an unaltered cat around. He is not broke and can do regular vet care and could find the funds in an emergency situation, but for now he is pooling his resources into settling into his apartment and getting it ready for his son's visitations (a lot of the furniture and such went with the gf and baby).

I would like to help him find just the right cat. Jasper deserves a friend and my friend is a very good cat owner. He loves Jasper and is really worried about how much time he spends alone. The cat would be indoor only, like Jasper. He would consider an already declawed cat who needs a good, safe home, but Jasper isn't declawed (though he's not aggressive at all and was always the one getting picked on by the fosters, so it could work).

Also, don't worry about the presence of the young child. The baby is almost 2 and has already been taught how he allowed to touch the kitties and is very gentle and lovey with Jasper. Also, the baby is NEVER left unsupervised around the cat (for the cat's protection as well as his) and there are cat trees and high spots for Jasper all around the apartment.

I know this guy well and he would make a great home for a cat who needs one. Plus, I'd really like to help Jasper, who is so lonely. Does anyone here know of a cat in the GTA that would fit the bill? We would be willing to go anywhere around Toronto or north up to Barrie.

Do you know what their adoption fees are? The other shelter near here is a little steep (it cost us almost $300 for our dog) and he wants to have money left over in case vet costs come up.

A few weeks ago I could have offered my FIL female cat, but she has since gone to live with my DH's niece. I will ask around to see if I can find a local one, but I agree the shelter idea is a good on. That way he can take his child with him during his visitation to help pick a cat that likes them both.

I visited the stray I caught last Saturday at the Upper Credit Humane Society (they are a no-kill shelter) and they have 2 rooms with about 15 cats in each room. Most of the cats are just free to roam in the rooms. They were pretty friendly with me and didn't seem to have any issues with each other so probably would integrate well into your home.

I believe they charge $125 and that's with all shots, spay/neuter and some food.

They are located on Trafalgar Road and Wellington Road 22 (Erin). I was very impressed with them and the way they treat their animals.

But, on the other hand, it would be nice to get a cat from a "kill" shelter - at least that's one less kitty that has to die. Giving a home to a shelter cat is a wonderful thing to do.

Also, please print the thread (or have your friend come here and read it) about introducing a new cat into the home with an existing cat (if you haven't already). It's important to start the introduction correctly or you could have some issues and have to start all over fromt he top.

I'm sure he'll be able to find a cat that is in a shelter that will fit perfectly with Jasper. Also, he would be rescuing a baby

I'll talk to him about the humane society. It's a good idea to take the baby, but that will mean he has to wait because as of now, his ex hasn't let him have the kid.....hopefully that will soon change.

Erin is a bit far, since there are shelters here that would cost the same or less. If he can set aside the money, maybe we'll try the humane society. It's just that, with custody and visitation rights to settle, there could be some major costs in the future, so he's trying not to spend too much.

I'll point him to the thread, but he's familiar with cat introductions, having fostered before.
