They're flatter and have a wider base than the mouth. The simplest answer, because they can. I switched to heavier bowls after Tomas decided that both Sho and he needed a 'water bowl bath'. Sho was not pleased. I awoke to an annoyed wet cat, followed by annoying wet kitten.
