I actually wish the U.S. would introduce national IDs. I live in Germany, so the only ID I have, other than my German driver's license, which doesn't have my address, and isn't considered "official ID" here, is my U.S. passport, which also doesn't officially record my address. No way am I gong to carry my passport around all the time - it would be too much of a hassle to get a replacement should it be lost or stolen, as there's no longer a U.S. Consulate in my area.
If national identity cards were issued, I'd probably have to use my last permanent U.S. address, though, which I'm required to supply in order to vote. Apparently it doesn't matter that it hasn't been my place of residence since May 1st, 1982!!
I don't think this whole idea will work.
