Hi all,
My kitty Sydney (female) has another UTI (this is her 3rd). I was thinking of maybe trying to give her Cranberry Powder to prevent another one. Is this a good idea? Will it help? Also, is there any specific food I can feed her to help? My vet told me that the only thing I can do is feed a low ash food.

Hi Candy,

I am sorry you are having to deal with this over and over. Perhaps you might want to ask your vet to look into the possibility that kitty could have Feline Urologic Syndrome? Sometimes when the cat is getting the same symptoms over and over, this could be the case.

Wysong makes a Uretic Diet for Cats that I hear is quite good. You want to push fluids for kitty, and even if you are feeding dry, try keeping it moistened with broth or water to help cut down the irritation the cat will deal with, as the food breaks down inside. Wet food is usually preferable and add water to it as well.

I don't know about Cranberry Powder? Never heard of feeding a cat Cranberry Powder before. Sometimes a surgery will cure the problem, the vet will go in and make the opening of the urethra bigger so the cat will be able to do her business without problems. But that is something you and your vet need to decide on. Best of luck!

Thanks hissy,
My vet told me that UTI's in males and females happen for two different reasons, is this true? That is why he said to use a low ash food, instead of one specialized for UTI prevention. I will look up some information on Feline Urologic Syndrome, thanks.
