Hi All,

I'm Jess, and I'm new here. You have quite the board - I've been lurking since I've known my sweet Fuchi-kitty was pregnant. Lots of great pictures and good advice!

In December, my family and I adopted my best friend's cat after he'd passed away. She came to us unaltered, thin, stressed out, covered with scabs from a flea allergy, with waxy thin hair. I immediately got her sorted out with the vet, and she's shaped up to be a beautiful, healthy, silky coated kitty - she's a longhair tortie. They wouldn't spay her because she needed to get a little stronger, and in the meantime, she went in heat, and the dog let her outside. [If you've ever seen "Over The Hedge" where the skunk talks the cat into helping her navigate the radio controlled kitty door - that's what happened
]

She proceeded to get pregnant and then lost the babies. The vet STILL wouldn't spay her, saying she needed to recover. The dog let her out AGAIN - even he couldn't take her yowling - and she got pregnant. I begged him to do it, knowing I can prevent a pregnancy, but I didn't have it in me to terminate one. Long story short: she's pregnant now, and due any day. Today is 57 days.

Although I have 4 cats, we've never had kittens because they all were altered upon adoption, and she's a first time mama, so it's the blind leading the blind here.

So here are my questions:

1) Do most cats stop eating 24 hours before giving birth? All? Some? What's your experience been?

2) Her bottom is oily and unclean, as she's too big to reach it. Should I do anything about this?

3) What's the best way to take a temperature? She's still quite stressed out, even more so that she's expecting, and she's just not a fan of letting me that close. However, I really want to be home when these babies are born, so I'd like to know.

4) How do you go about setting up a box for a cat who doesn't want one? She has no desire to be anywhere but near me, which is often where the dog is, and that isn't the best place for a litter of kittens to be born. I have a very large walk in closet I can put her in - is that the best for her if it stresses her out further, but keeps the babies in a safe place away from my kids and the other animals?

5) How long is the pregnancy? I've read 57 days, 63 days...etc. What's the average?

The past few days she's just been sleeping alot. It's hard to tell if she's anxious, because she's quite a spazz case to begin with. There's quite a bit of activity in her tummy, and I think she gets bigger every 30 minutes!

Thank you, in advance, for taking the time to answer these questions for me. I'll post pictures of Fuchi, and the rest of the brood, along with the babies, soon.

=)

Welcome to TCS! I've added your girl to our "Kitten Watch" thread: http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...122520&page=10

I've had two foster cats give birth this year, so I'll answer your questions to the best of my knowledge... others will be along soon to help you I'm sure!

1. Neither of my cats stopped eating before giving birth. One of them even ate in between kittens.

2. If you think her bottom is in need of cleaning, you can use a baby wipe to clean her up.

3. If she won't let you take her temperature, don't stress her out. One of my girls let me take hers, but the other refused to allow it so I didn't push the issue.

4. With both of my girls, I had large dog crates set up for them. After they were settled and comfortable (when the babies were about 2 weeks old), the moms kept wanting to be together, so I moved both families into a large cardboard box.

5. I had to estimate both of my girls' due dates, so I don't know exactly what day they were on. I have read that the average is 63 days but it can be any time between 57-70 days.

Thanks! I'll be sure to update you when she has them.

Here are some pictures of the 4 legged kids:

Fuchi, around 3-4. As you can tell, she's not happy about having her picture taken.

Dynamite. He's the coolest cat - more like a dog than a cat. LOVES his tail pulled and to go on walks with Hershey and I.

Gracie, 2 years old. She pretty much ignores us until she wants food.

Pepper, also 2 years. She's the whiniest cat I've ever seen

Hershey, 11 month old Chocolate Lab/GSP Mix. He's having a hip replacement in 3 weeks, on his birthday of all days

My cat Kalli is 59 days today. She also doesn't want to be anywhere but near me. If her bum is dirty then I would clean it for her.

As for a box, Kalli didn't want to get anywhere near any of the boxes I had set up for her. That is u ntill on Friday when i cut a square in a side of a box just bigg enough for her to get in and out. Then i closed the top and put a rug on top of it. So i can just lift the rug off and the box will open, to see whats in. She loves this box, she spends 85 % of her time in there. You should try it, oh yeah i put a comfortable blanket at the bottom of it too.

Sounds like you are describing my cat! Except for the spazz cases I guess.
Good luck to you and your cat! she is very pretty, and so are your other cats!

It seems that she's getting closer. She decided today that she did not want to be around our puppy, so I put her in our bedroom to get some peace and quiet. She helped me make a bed for her in the closet, and she's settled in quite nicely!

She's still eating - ALOT - but she is growing more anxious and vocal. Perhaps today will be the day!

One of the other girls, Gracie, keeps going into the closet and cleaning her, which is odd, because they never did that before. Cute, nevertheless.

I have no advice, just wanted to tell you I've got a Lab/GSP mix, too!
She's 4 & has something going on with her hips/back legs.

Mushy ate about 1/2 of a can of wet food the morning before she gave birth. I had a feeling that she was going to have babies that night because she usually gobbles up her wet food.
Most people here suggest that you set your alarm for every 1 1/2 hours at night when she hits 60 days (I think). I woke up in the middle of the night to tiny meows...couldn't find the kittens...then Mushy came to get me and show me where she was laboring.

Fuchi's breathing has gotten quite rapid, and she's vomiting now. Figures, at 11:30 at night, when I'm just getting a cold. Wasn't planning on sleeping much tonight anyway

No babies yet, but it was a long night for both of us. She sure doesn't look very happy today.

I think Fuchi is enjoying messing with me, which is very consistent with her personality

She helped herself to her bed today, was breathing VERY rapidly, started digging around in her bed - then climbed right up on my head and went to sleep.

So, no babies yet. I'm thankful for that today, though, as I've developed a case of the flu. Maybe she'll give me time to sleep this off.

Okay, I think it's time.

Fuchi is panting a lot, with her mouth hanging open and such. She's still eating, but maybe that's just how this is going to go.

How much time usually passes between the panting stage, and the birthing stage?

YaY!!! My Mushy didn't pant at all. I believe that if panting starts, then it will usually last until she is done giving birth?... Not sure though.

Ugh. I don't know who's more nervous - Fuchi or me.

She lost her mucous plug this morning, and she's discharging a fair amount - but she won't clean herself so I have to do it for her. Her temperature went down, but came back up again to 100. She's finally letting me take it, so I know she's getting way close. All she wants to do is lay in my arms baby-style and have her tummy rubbed, but I had to put her in the box

I'm praying she has these babies soon so we all can relax a bit!
