I have a nearly-9-year-old neutered male "domestic shorthair" cat named Satey who has many oriental personality traits. For the first couple of years of his life he was acquainted with his brother, but when we moved to a new house, brother went to my sister's room, and Satey stayed in my room. Now Satey is all but antisocial and favors me, rarely letting other humans in the house pet him except whe I am not around to see. Brother cat died almost 3 years ago, but after a few months of being seperated from each other Satey would have nothing to do with brother cat anyway.
ANYWAY my problem is that every once in awhile Satey will just bite my hand or arm HARD and put his ears back and flinch like he just knows that he's done something wrong :evilalien: . I was just wondering if he does this out of boredom and perhaps needs a new companion or what. I never hit my cat so it's not like he's "getting back" at me or something. Usually he'll come up to me all snuggly-like and purring, and let me pet him for a few, when he'll turn on me and just bite the heck out of my hand. This doesn't happen when I touch any certain area on his body or anything, it's just like he gets frustrated with me.
Other than this, he's a good cat, and the biting doesn't happen very often. Maybe once every 2 weeks or so.If anyone has any suggestions or thoughts on the matter, please reply

I sure can relate to you about your kitty biting. My Nomar does the exact same thing. When he wants to snuggle up, he will jump on my lap and start purring. I'll pet him and he enjoys it but the minute he's through with my attention he bites my hand or wrist. He has done this since he was young.. Only one time did he lick my hand and that was last week when I brought him home from hospital. There are times if I am on the keyboard he will head butt my arm to get my attention. At times he has left bruises on me. I don't get angry with him. I am just thankful he wants my attention...

Is he declawed? if the answer is yes, that is your reason, and it isn't going to get better. If the answer is no, he may have an obsessive/compulsive disorder related to the biting. You can learn more about this from Dr. Nicholas Doddman - check out the Tufts University website.

As for my kitty, Nomar he is not declawed, and never will be. As for his biting he has done that since he was young. He does not do it constantly but when he no longer wants my attention he will bite my hand.. I guess in his mind, he's had enough for a while. Which I can understand...but I am always talking with him and since he follows me around the house there is definitely a bond between us.. if he was to display aggressive behavior such as scratching and biting I would check into seeing why hes doing it. For now I just let him know I'm here when he wants my attention...

Nope, Satey is not declawed. He's Neutered, but he was neutered at 5 or 6 months, and he's almost 9 years now.
Our now-deceased cat, Clouds, used to do the pet-then-bite thing when she'd had enough of us, but I don't think this is the same thing with Sateycat at all. Ha hasn't been doing it his whole life, either; just the past couple of years. And as I said, it's only every once in awhile (once a week or every 2 weeks) and he usually does it in the early morning hours like...4-6 AM (once he even woke me up by biting my hand)
I will check out the Tufft's University website. I assume info would be under the veternary school links?

I heard here in another thread that cats little bodies are very sensitive. My kitty does the same thing, exactly as Nomar and Satey.. (Cute names) Sometimes petting can irritate them and it hurts so they strike out. I think Lily does it just to remind me she is boss

When Lily bites her ears go back and she moves away very slowly, she know immediately that she has done something wrong. I pretend to cry and make her feel sorry for me. She comes up and rubs on me, I think she feels bad

After reading about Lily, I truly believe cats have personalities. They are not just four legged creatures.
Nomar (who by the way was named after my favorite Red Sox player)...
Sometimes when Nomar no longer wants my attention and bites my arm, if I say something to him, he looks at me as if he didn't do anything. The cutest thing Nomar has ever done and it has nothing to do with biting. When he was 4 months old, he was curious about everything.. He knocked over plants, broke lamps, you name it he did it. Finally one day I was so distressed that I picked him up, and said stop breaking mommys things !!
He looked at me and stuck out his tongue...hows that for a personality?

Thank you Swalker
Satey is actually short for "Little Satan." I got him from a litter that my cousins' cat had. They had taken to calling him Satan since he was black. I got him home and for days waited for him to name himself, but Little Satan just stuck. Since he's so sweet I just shortened it to "Satey"

As for his body being sensitive: I don't think that's the case here. Sometimes I'll just pat him on the head lightly, lay my arm down, and he'll put his ears back and reach down and bite the heck out of me (I never really touch him in a manner that's rough anyway). Satey has such a sturdy body: he weighs 14 pounds and he's also of a very solid build, like a Meezer. When he bites it hurts! I am starting to think, like Rene suggested, that he has an Obsessive-Compulsive biting disorder. He only does this once in awhile, and it'a always at a certain time of day (early morning). I've looked for Dr. Doddman on the internet, but the only articles out there are in books that I would have to buy. I am going to check the local library system to see if they can track me down a copy of a couple books by him that I can check out. If not , then I'll look into buying a book or two by this man. I just want to find him in a bookstore so I can be sure the book I purchase is the one that has advice about biting disorders.

Thank you all so much for your replies!
