My mom's kitchen floor is like that, and the Dyson works fine. Are you going to get an upright, or the canister-type? She has an upright.

I seem to remember that the canister-type isn't available in the U.S..

We are looking at the upright.

You bet!

I have the 3 cats + 2 large (and very furry!) dogs + carpet + vinyl flooring. I swear if it weren't for my dyson, I'd lose my mind! It's the only thing that can tackle my Newfie's fur. The static cling on the vinyl is no match for the dyson. It's even done well as a shop vac after I'm done with whatever my latest DIY project was

Like I always say... the only down side to the Dyson is that it pulls so much stuff out of your carpet, once you're done vacuuming and you go to empty the canister, you want to bathe with brillo because you can't believe how dirty your house was.

They say when you get the new dyson... first clean your house with your old machine... then clean your house with your new machine... you'll be amazed what your old machine left in your carpet. I was... and so was someone else on here I suggested that to... but I cant remember who it was
(Sorry! It was a while ago

I have a dyson too - a dyson animal cylinder - and I love it.

I've had it just over a year and haven't washed any filters yet
It picks up cat hair wonderfully. I bought mine from amazon as it was on offer at the time and over £100 cheaper than in the shops.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
We invested in a Dyson when we first moved into a house from the RV. IT IS AMAZING!

We had the place professionally cleaned before we moved in, and we had the carpets (upstairs only at the old house) cleaned twice. We could have sworn the Dyson was manufacturing stuff, because the cylinder started to fill up before anyone had even been up there after all that!

We empty the cylinder frequently - it just depends upon the amount of cat hair around, I guess. The filters we wash with water and let them dry - probably every couple of months.

I'm really allergic to cats, and while the zyrtec is great, I don't know what I'd do without the Dyson too!

Go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another Dyson lover here. In fact, just before I logged on to TCS I vacuumed. And now I love to vacuum because the Dyson makes it so much easier! It's truly incredible the amount of junk it picks up from the floor - both carpet and linoleum. We have the Animal (purple). I can't imagine going back to another brand after using the Dyson. We've had it for almost a year and use it 1-2 times a week. I need to clean the filter probably, but quite honestly haven't yet because it's still picking up so much.
I better go do that now while I'm thinking about it.

In any case, it sounds like you've already decided to go ahead and buy one, but I thought I'd throw in my support anyway.

I just looked at what is available in NZ and it doesn't look like the Animal one is available.
What is the next best thing?

I have a Fantom Fury that I bought about 8 or 9 years agod I think. Got it at Wal-Mart for about $300.00 back then. I think the price came down by 1/2 a couple years later.

It's an upright bagless that has a HEPA filter. The handle detaches and you can use the vacuum as a cannister type for floors and furniture etc. When you replace the locking handle it becomes an upright for carpets.

Things I don't like about it are:

1. When you are using it as a cannister type vacuum, the beater bar in the powerhead still turns so if you get anything caught under it, like the cord, you break the power bar belt!

2. I go through a large number of belts. In the last 6 or 8 months I think I've gone through 10 of them. Frustrating as all heck because they aren't the easiest to change.

3. Has too many places that you have to check in order to clear blockages, about 5 I think, one area I need to use a straightend out coat hanger.

Other than that the suction is pretty good because it works on cyclonic action. Plus I only have an area rug and hardwood floors so my HEPA filter is still good based on the fact that the button indicating it needs to be changed hasn't popped out.

I would like to get another vacuum but I have my heart set on a Filter Queen, but those things are like $3,000.00!!!!!!!!!!! Even the used ones are over $500.00, but they last forever and are the original cyclonic vacuums and they never lose suction, unlike the uprights that you get these days, even the Dyson will lose suction when the cannister gets too full.

We've got the All Floors, and it's fine for picking up cat hair!

Edit: Just looked at the NZ Dyson site - you can get the mini turbine head as an accessory in NZ (which is what we're going to do since it didn't come with ours), because apparently that's awesome for pet hair, upholstery, and car cleaning.

We have a purple Dyson Animal at the shelter where i work. It's AWESOME!!!!! We change the filter (just depending) after we're done vaccuming for the day. It doesn't loose suction that i've noticed (but it's fairly new) and it is also not too heavy eithor. I want one
