My Macey sits like this when her hips hurt.

Watch for lameness, stiff legs, yelping when he gets up, not wanting to get up. I've even had a dog who had HD that would mess herself rather then get up & go outside to potty when she really hurt.

Oh Natalie- Macey is beautiful!!!!
and look at her pretty pink collar!!!
/ By the way- thankyou soo much for posting the picture so i have an idea of what it looks like when they're sitting in a position that might indicate something! My wolf mix Ginger that lives with my mom (she's 12 now and has hip issues) sits just like that and also has a lot of stiffness in her back legs and does howls to the high heavens when her legs hurt!!! (she gets daily meds for it and glucosamine) I wish i would have known to look for that earlier on.

Some dogs just sit like that. Macey never did until about a year ago. I've been watching her carefully & doing what I can to ensure she remains comfortable.

There's no place like home
The other thing that I notice with HD dogs is that they walk stiff legged and it almost looks like they are walking flat footed, but only with their back legs. It's hard to describe but I can pick up a HD dog just by how they walk. HD dogs can also lose muscle mass in their back legs as they favor them. It will be hard to tell with Norris's broken back leg for a while.

I fostered a dog with a severe case of it (he went thru total hip replacement surgery at age 1). My OTB Jethro had it and my Spike is showing early signs of it now.

Tasha sits like that, but she has her whole life. They originally thought she had a bit of Rottwiler in her when she was a baby, she had the markings, so we were told to watch for that. Now she's about 11 years old. Her back legs shake when she's been on them too long but she acts like she doesn't even notice. Mom tries to keep an eye on her when she's going up and down the stairs but the Vet says she's doing really well inspite of the shaking!

I was going to post saying that Norris' face/expression remind me of Abby a bit...but we have no clue exactly what Abby is! I think she's a bit smaller than Norris, it's just the expression around the eyes and the way they meet the snout and things.

From that description- i wouldnt be suprised if a few of our shelter doggies have HD then (we have several older ones who always look like their legs are stiff when they walk. i hate that they are stuck in the kennels- but we put blankies/etc in there to try and make them as comfortable as possible. Aside from Glucosamine and the orthapedic beds (and possibly physical therapy) do you know of anything i can do to reduce Norris's leg pain post op and throughout his recovery?? I've never worked with dogs that have had orthapedic surgery before so this will be new to me (my expertise is bottle baby kittens). Thanks again for all the advice!!!

Abby sounds like a cutie pie!!!! I hope your Tasha doesn't develop HD- i'm sure with your mom watching her and taking good care of her she will be ok

i was thinking about malnois at first -but he doesn't match at all- malnois have long slender faces with black muzzles and are usually larger/etc (a number of other things.) definitely not basenji in him eithor. And as far as Carolina Dogs go - that's what our doggie Whiskey is
(they're beautiful!) so i definitely know Norris is not a Carolina Dog. We are almost definite however now after several vets looked at him that he is a purebreed Jindo
So now we somewhat know!
thanks for your ideas!
