The thing I love about Chicago, Allie, is that people cuss about being stuck in traffic, then go home & laugh at the suckers stuck in traffic while they watch them on TV!

Nope, no "Action" news here, but we also have the helicopters, the news van satelite trucks, and of course, the storm chaser vans/hummers/whatever with the mobile weather stations.

Our big deal weather station had just gotten their brand new storm chaser van a few years ago, had the big hoopla about the unveiling, took it out to chase some tornado producing storms, and got it pretty much blown to bits in a tornado the first time out (windows gone, etc.).

They had film of the van crew running for a hotel's side door, and the door being locked, and the ensuing moment of panic when it wouldn't open (someone from inside ran over and let them in promptly, and everybody was fine, so it was kinda funny later- they are always telling us to get to our "place of safety", and to have it picked out ahead of time, but nobody bothered to ask the hotel to leave them a quick way in
)

We have a couple of Canadian coins around here somewhere...

Ugh, and the traffic here is AWFUL, and with the Dan Ryan (I90/94 East) reduced to one lane, I believe we are now second to none in the country on traffic awfulness. Well, we're in the top 10 anyway, with the average person being delayed 70 hours a year.

I used to get Canadian coins a lot when I paid with cash, but they were mostly the penny types, never amounted to much. I worked at a gas station and there was a guy that used to fly his company jet to Canada to sell stuff for his company and I would give them all to him when he stopped by. Probably ended up being the equivalent of $3 US dollars lol

I'm about a 2 hour drive from Chicago btw. Neat
I haven't seen anyone on here that lives very close to me till now.

...and while I'm here -- Bruce, most stations buy those graphics packages (and theme music packages, as well) from big production companies, and they get exclusivity within a designated area. That's why a station in Ohio can duplicate the look and sound of a station in Texas.

How they manage to duplicate all those Bighaired Weathergirls and Wacky Plaid-Jacket Sportsguys, I don't know...

Extremely common. Every major city's network stations have copters it seems. There is an advantage to this beyond local news and traffic reporting. Being an affiliate of a network means the local station can feed important stories to their parent network, or even sell coverage to world-wide news organizations like the BBC or CNN. It is also a status symbol for the station. Not uncommon is to also have the flying reporters do radio stories and traffic for their sister station (which is partnered with the TV station).

Two of our 5 known news choppers (CBS/WBBM; NBC/WMAQ; ABC/WLS; CW/WGN; FOX/WFLD) overhead last week when a high school experienced a fire. I didn't catch the other two that showed up (I was late

One of our local radio stations did have a chopper but since it crashed they haven't bought a new one

As far as the TV stations, Global have one as do CTV (CTV even run competitions where you can win a ride in theirs to see how they do the news etc). I know only 3 networks have choppers (according to wiki) so I guess Toronto in the place for them

We have about 5 local stations and I think they all call themselves "action news". I have no idea which ones have choppers (at least 3 of them) and some of them also do the weather and traffic on the local radio stations.

When I drive to work, I will look to the sky for them and if they are hovering over an area, I pick an alternative route. They signal a big traffic jam.

When I lived way out in the boonies, I saw one flying overhead one evening so I turned on the TV and saw that a pipeline had exploded about 2 miles from my house. I could see the flames from my front yard as well as the TV!

I guess the copters are good for something!

I don't know if any of our stations use "Action". Guess I should pay more attention. I know our NBC and ABC affiliates have choppers, and maybe FOX, but our CBS doesn't even have a local news broadcast. I think it was the ABC chopper that was commandeered by the local police to find a bank robber in a cornfield. They used the downdraft from the rotors to move the tall corn around and expose him.

Mostly see nickels and quarters and most places here will accept them.

Are any of the quarters comemorating the states making their way up there?

1.The whole "Action News" thing is rather funny. Yes, we do have a station like that here. Just by chance is that a Fox network?

BTW, I do listen to As It Happens on my way home from work every night.

2. No, I don't keep Canadian change. In fact it annoys me because it doesn't fit in the vending machine at work. Sometimes a girl needs a cup of coffee.

I think that in Toronto more news stations have helicopters then the police do. Police can't afford a copter - have to borrow the one from Peel Region - how embarrassing.

1. Yes!!! Channel 7 Action news...Traffic Copter or something of that like. Even the weather mapping tools they use are Doppler 4000 or Viper 5000.
Oh and I'm sorry that you get a Detroit channel. We report nothing by crime here. That's why we're the angriest and most suicidal city in the country...we hear nothing but bad things on the news.

WHAT?! Where were you going??? Paper money is a no-no here, but the pennies, nickels, quarters and dimes are pretty much free for all. The only place I haven't been able to use it is on YOUR side of the state (
) and the liquor store by my house. Oh and the vending machines. The one we have at work broke the other day because someone put a canadian quarter in instead of a U.S. dollar.

Besides, the U.S. dollar is only $0.08 away from being dollar to dollar to Canada...so we're almost even steven. It's been a LONG time since we were like that. I didn't realise this until Natalie was asking about a $7000 CAN car.

I live a couple hours from the Canadian border. We do not have a 'chopper cam' at the new channels. But I do get Canadian change. I can't use it. I turned in a coffee can full of change once to the credit union, a machine counted it and spit out the Canadian coins. The credit union wouldn't exchange it, they said they would 'toss' it! oops, no offense.
I seem to remember when i was a kid in northern Wisconsin we could spend Canadian change as if it was American.

You can come to Moose Jaw and buy some interesting shirts like "Saskatchewan: Easy to draw, hard to spell"!

My brother used to joke when the coloured bills came out that the Americans would think it's Monopoly money.

And that second part is a riot!

I guess not!
And for state coins I have older ones... two Connecticut (1999), Massachusetts (2000), Virginia (2000), and Maryland (2000).

Well that channel is more exciting (in a twisted way) than our local ones... all they seem to have is Farmgate and other equally exciting programs.

And I could never live in Saskat....you get the point. I can't spell it! I'd have to go back to elementary school to learn how to spell it.

Well, my DH lived in Detoit for a while and really had a bunch of crap from people for trying to use the coins! I've never had an issue on MY side of the state! We're nice over here!
Maybe my DH only ever tried to use them at liquor stores though!
