I went to Mexico on a mission trip. People lived on a dump. The poverty was amazing. (Yes, I have been on missions for the poor in the US too)
While in Mexico, I was thankful that I was born in America and was "born into" if you will a certain set of rights as far as a nice living goes. Many aren't as lucky. A fence, stricter laws, etc. these aren't going to be effective.
Until something is done to address the social issue of Mexicans that feel that the US is their promise land and their ticket out of poverty that most Americans who makes these laws cannot imagine for more than a day, not much will be effective IMO.
This might be interesting to note, at the rate the population is going, the majority of people in the US will be of Hispanic background (this is counting the legals and looking at past US censuses, birth rates, death rates, etc), I believe in class they quoted the year 2030.
Most of us agree with you, but Mexico is a sovereign nation that needs to be forced to step up and care for its OWN people.
This bill should be about what is in the US's best interest, not the best interest of those who want to come here. Maybe if we didn't just let all of the able-bodied come up here from Mexico, they might try to affect change in their own country.
Bush is pushing the Republicans to support the bill. Apparently, all of the thousands, if not millions, of phone calls, letters and emails that members of Congress got from their own constituents don't matter.
It doesn't matter what the PEOPLE want, apparently.
And Harry Reid actually, honest to god said that this would "bring the undocumented Americans out of the shadows." HUH? Undocumented Americans? Since when does crossing the border automatically give you citizenship? If I go north illegally, does that make me an "undocumented Canadian"? I don't think so!
I think it's pretty pathetic when France can come up with better ways to deal with illegal immigration, faster, than the US. France says "No more!" and yet Congress and the President want to accept 12 MILLION who are here illegally with open arms.
