i gave that fight up years ago.
i'm just happy they stay off when i'm using the counters (helped with the squirt bottle sometimes). raven does know what "get down" means, and will get down. the other 2 need the squirt bottle to remind them what "get down" means.

i must have rubbed off on my MIL. when we visited over mother's day weekend, she didn't even bat an eye when morris (her cat) sauntered across the table.
when she first stayed at our place she was horrified and told me mike must really love me to let the cats on the counter.
like he had a choice!

Oh, please. Fenwick's favourite nap spot is on the counter, curled up on my cutting board. I have been known to sit on the floor because Felix is hogging the couch, and Fergie regularly licks my husband's food (and if she likes it, he just gives it to her!). Who do you think is trained around here?

I taught Skye not to jump on the changing table and crib does that count? I just screamed really loud any time I saw her on there and she stopped. I guess she doesnt like my shriek. LOL

for the most part mine stay off.... I use the same "eh eh eh" in mean tone for them to get it.....and I point my finger at them violently, Louie ducks, like I'm gonna throw something at him!
Now, I've caught them up there a few times.... but mostly they don't...

Our three cats don't jump on the kitchen counters or dining room table. From day one, none of my cats have ever been allowed to.

For the new cat/kitten, it has usually taken about of month of continual <jump> "NO" <put cat back on the floor>. Then <jump> "NO" <put cat back on the floor>, <jump> "NO" <put cat back on the floor>. With the whole family doing it, being gentle but firm and consistent, it works. At some point you just say "NO" when you see them thinking about it. They eventually give up, because they are almost always right back on the floor again.

As long as I am here (well, most of the time - she still sometimes does it in front of me) I can keep her off of the counters. I trained her a long time ago, now she just doesn't get up there much (at least that I can see). If I see she is going to I say no, don't think about it, she will usually stop thinking about it as much.

only my Meezers tries to get up on the counter. My other 2 don't seem that interested. I've given up trying to teach Meezers to stay down because he was already fully grown when I got him. I don't mind as long as he doesn't step in or try to eat something that I'm trying to cook. It's always funny when I have someone over for supper though. They say something like "Do you always let your cat help you cook?" and I reply with "Well who do you think made the orange juice you're drinking?"

I only have one who likes the counter - Ms Pepperpot and that is only when there is food up there. So if we learn to put leftovers away immediately, then we wouldn't have that problem. She doesn't jump up when we are in the kitchen - she knows she has a better chance of getting food when we aren't there to shoo her down

Forest is the only one of mine that stays off the counter...and that's only because he's physically incapable of jumping up there. But, trust me, if he could find a way to climb up, he'd be up there in a heartbeat!

I used to try, but I've now given up on the countertop battle. Tailer figured out a long time ago that we weren't going to do anything really heinous to him no matter what he did, so he's willing to risk getting yelled at or tapped off.
It seems unfair to yell at Harvey for doing the same thing Tailer's doing.

Are you kidding!!!!??!!!! Once they know what you keep on your counters there's no turning back. Even our little blind cat has figured out how to get on the counters. She jumps on anything that makes noise and when she feels the edge she takes a chance and jumps onto it. There's no hope to keep your cats off the counter, of course, unless they come up with a great new aniti-counter devise which would include cutting your kitties legs off!!!! Tell your friend to get a cat and teach it to talk, that will work just as well as teaching it to stay off the counters

i like to feign innocence. "oh he NEVER does that! how shocking! i just can't believe it!"
it only works the first time the guest is over though.

Our three persians NEVER jump on the counters and have never tried. Lexi does not jump on counters, but she does on my chair and computer desk or even my tv. She was a stray and there is no way to tell her otherwise.

I have trained mine to stay off the counters, and as far as I know they don't go on them while I am out / at night (or at least they don't knock over stuff like they used to)

They are allowed anywhere else except the table where my hamster is and they don't need to be 'told' to stay away anymore
