A friend of mine who lives in the middle of nowhere, big farms, lots of land, etc has a bunch of outdoor/barn cats. She was concerned about the wildlife living in the area, particularly the many many racoons living out there. The obvious answer here would be to vaccinate all the barn cats against rabies which is what you are supposed to do. But she was asking if there is a way to vacciante the racoons!??! This sounded really silly at first but I was thinking about how there are places that drop rabies bait down into areas for the wildlife so they don't get rabies. I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about that?

They drop vaccinated bait for raccoons here. Wouldn't it be great if there could be a way to vaccinate barn and feral cats the same way?? Thru their food? I have seen references that if these drops prove successful,it may actually be the start of something new! I have actually talked to a TWRA(Tenn. Wildlife Resource Agency) officer here about those possibilities....but that was a while ago.

Yes either dropping the bait down for the cats or even the raccoons themselves. I think the cats could easily be vaccinated if someone were to TNR them but I don't think that is happening here. I don't know, it was just a though that sounded interesting. Either that or really silly!

Not silly at all!! These bait drops have actually resulted in a decline of rabies reports in our county,so far. I hope she gets her cats vaccinated and not take that risk!! I mean...even tho they are doing the drops and the reports are down, there is no way of proving the coons are actually eating the bait! I don't take the chance with my girls, anyway!
