Most commercial deodorizers are just baking soda plus some scent added.
I've never been fond of the scented stuff, you just end up smelling kitty poo and flowers.

But plain baking soda helps a little, and frequent scooping of course.

baking soda. i mix it in with the litter. i also bought one of those refrigerator baking soda boxes and set it next to the bedroom boxes. a homemade version of that would be a bowl with baking soda in it.
i didn't like what i read about air fresheners, so baking soda was my choice.

Well it is in a way. What comes out is tied to what goes in. What are you feeding? When I used to feed Whiskas to our cats, the litter box stunk to high heaven. Since moving on to some better quality food, I barely notice the smell.

The type of litter you use has a lot to do with it, in my experience.

You're talking about a urine smell? What kind of litter do you have?

The type that clumps is far superior for keeping the urine smell away. I can't stand the other type which doesn't allow for removing the pee clumps. It makes a huge difference. My house smells like a pet store when I use the non-clumping kind. You can tell I really hate it.

If you have plain chicken feed available, give that a try. By plain, I mean something with no antibiotics, or other additives in it.

I use Purina Layena here because it is nicely ground and additive free, (also cheap!), and it works well for clumping and odor control.
