Save Jericho! Don't Let CBS Cancel a Great Show!

At 2 p.m. on May 16, 2007, CBS announced its 2007-2008 primetime slate. Jericho was not on it. The network has decided that it wasn't worth the fight to relaunch it for a second season.

If you get a real person, be polite and ask them to reconsider their decision and tell them how much you miss the show. If you get voicemail, let's keep that mailbox full.

I contacted CBS. I just can't believe they would cancel such an amazing show. Besides Heroes, I think it's the best show on TV now. The cliffhanger was intense. I can't believe they would cancel a show without at least letting know what happened. I'd assume that they've probably already filmed other episodes. I hope they at least release followup shows on DVD like what happened with Surface. I just can't believe the networks would keep churning out shows like the Geico cavemen, and Survivor- sad state of affairs I say!

Sorry, but it really is cancelled.

CBS posted a statement on the Jericho forum:

Below is a statement from CBS Entertainment:

To the fans of Jericho:

We have read your emails over the past few days and have been touched by the depth and passion with which you have expressed your disappointment. Please know that canceling a television series is a very difficult decision. Hundreds of people at the Network, the production company and the incredibly-talented creative team worked very hard to build and serve the community for this show -- both on-air and online. It is a show we loved too.

Thank you for supporting Jericho with such passion. We truly appreciate the commitment you made to the series and we are humbled by your disappointment. In the coming weeks, we hope to develop a way to provide closure to the compelling drama that was the Jericho story.

Nina Tassler, President of CBS Entertainment

Also, if CBS releases Jericho as a DVD set, go out and buy it! That is the way to get a show back - show them the power of the almighty dollar. That's what happened with Family Guy - when they released the DVDs there were record breaking sales and they saw the demand for the show. Continual emails to the network heads will only make things worse. They've seen the outcry and from this statement it looks like they are working on a compromise between making the fans happy, and making their sponsors happy.

Here's the thing - them putting Jericho up against American Idol was all but a death sentence for that show. Just like Fox putting their latest "hit" (whatever it may have been) on Friday night and hoping for the same kind of following that The X-Files got. That time slot has killed a lot of good shows too.

The other thing is that initially the show got really good ratings, but throughout the season it dropped and dropped and dropped. I mean, it sucks that one of your favorite shows got canceled (it's happened to me too!), but somewhere along the line people stopped watching the show...

Just found this about the ratings...

The ratings bear that out. After drawing a pretty solid 10.7 million viewers over its first 11 episodes in the fall, it fell off sharply after a long hiatus. The second half of the season fell to around 8 million viewers, with the adults 18-49 numbers also taking a sizable hit, often hovering just above a 2.0 rating.

This is precisely why I avoid new shows like the plague. As soon as you start watching the networks cancel. What infuriates me is the fact that I have never participated in nor known anyone who has, in these so called ratings. I own three dvrs and the only shows I can count on are soaps. The excuse for these ridiculous cancels is always low ratings, but they must be missing 90% or more of the actual viewers. Then they have the audacity to turn around and advertise another piece of junk new show. I was sick that they left Jericho hanging the way they did. Disgraceful, but not much you can do. They don't actually care what real viewers want. A certain network is one of the worst offenders so I don't even bother to try any of their new shows.
