Help - I can't stop myself. I went on-line to my favourite book store and I just purchased $85 worth of sci-fi/fantasy (some pre-order). My hubby is going to kill me! It seems like everytime I am online there I order something. I know I should go to the library, but I like to OWN a book and read at my leisure and usually read it more then once.

How can I stop this habit?

There isn't anything wrong with used books, but I don't know any Canadian used book websites - if I order from the US, then I have to pay duty. At least with this company, I have a membership card and I get a discount for that and another discount for ordering online. Plus if I order over $39, I get free shipping, even if all the books aren't avialble at the same time. I just spent $85, but if I went in store without the discounts it would have cost about $130 CDN.

I don't see anything wrong with it as long as you do read them more than once. You could alsy check out paperbackswap.com. It's a place where you can "trade" your books. They don't have to be paperbacks and all you pay is postage for the books you mail to others. Definatly worth checking out if your willing to part with some of you older (already read) books.

Oops: I just realized your in Canada... I'm not sure if/ how PBS would work for you then.

Hey, nothing wrong with wanting to own them - until you get old like me and have to move with boxes and boxes of heavy books (400 minimum - all hard covers). I no longer have the urge to "buy" books
but I do spend a great deal of time at our local library. They know me so well, she said to me the other night that my 2 books were due back on May 30th but she'd see me next week as usual.

One of the advantages of living in a smaller community (with access to surrounding libraries in the area) is that the ladies get to know your reading habits and have even called me at home to tell me one of my favourite authors had a new book and they were getting a copy - would I like my name on the list for it.

Pretty cool! If they don't have a book I want, they'll order it in and I'll have it within 2 days if not sooner.

I've had that problem too, and what I do is I make myself read a library copy first, and if I feel like I want it forever, I will buy it, but usually I'm happy reading it from the library.
