I'm sitting at my home computer desk and Ferris is on the floor by my side asking for my attention. I turn to him, give him a scritch, turn away. Rinse, repeat.

He stands up and puts his front paws on my chair seat. Teensie-weensie "brrrrr" noises coming from him. He gets a quick scritch, I turn away. Rinse, repeat.

I'm stubborn, you know. This boy needs to know he can come to me and get love in return (and food, of course.
)

I'm not just the bringer of bad stuff like: vet visits, drive-by attempted nail clippings, the wielder of big scary paper towels when he's just
his dinner all over the rug, etc.

He climbs on a box near the desk and again stands up on his his hind feet, front paws on my desk, looking pleadingly at me. I reach over and pick him up under the front legs (my GOSH he's heavy!) laying him on my lap - he is facing away from me and limply settles onto my legs and I pet him and love him and cherish this moment - starting to type this moment into a post while I pet him so I can share this moment with those who UNDERSTAND.

Several seconds later...

Awww...He gets down...but stays sniffing around my ankles. Then he runs off into my bedroom and starts tearing up a plastic bag I've left on the floor. I'd better go get it from him.

But still...that was a momentous 60 second exchange of affection with my semi-feral lovebug. I am SO proud of him.
You've come such a long way, my baby.

Ferris and Lily are very similar kitties methinks, and I absolutely understand how much that moment meant to you

I'm sooooo pleased he's slowly starting to realise that it's ok to ask for and receive snuggles

Good boy Ferris!

how is he with other people?

hey goes and hides anytime someone comes in the house. when i had a friend come over who is about 600 pounds, and very dark skin. heyu puffed up and ran under the couch and would not come out until after he left. that was only after i reached in and picked her up.

Soooooooooo lovely that his "armour" is cracking.
And every time he takes another little step and it doesn't backfire...well that's just building his confidence, so he'll take more chances. Soooooooooo lovely.

Awww...he loves you! That is such a big step that he asked you for affection. I think he's in serious danger of losing his feral street cred.

There's a sweet, sweet boy in there

When people come in he is nowhere to be found, but if they stick around, eventually his curiosity gets the best of him and he comes out to investigate, first as an orange ghost at the edges of the room, then coming closer to very timidly sniff at their feet, but he bolts backward if they try to pet him.

(Ginger, of course, is all over any visitors - she needs to thoroughly sniff them over.
One friend laughed when she stuck her nose right in his ear.
)

Ferris has just gotten to the point where he will allow one friend of mine in particular to pet him - but I think it's because she makes a point of playing with a wand toy with him every time she comes over, and I have given her treats to give to him, so they've made friends.
