at work. I haven't figured out who yet.

A couple of people that have err...noticed the loopholes where I work. So I mentioned this to a couple of people: as a System Admin, they should have done a background check on me (personally I think all Sys Admins with as much access as I have should have a background check).

Anyhoo, I told these observent people that my first week here I was given the access code to the safe to place backup tapes in. This safe also contains a slew of guns and rifles (one of the owners has a side shop out of the company). So with no background check, only person interviewed me before offering me a job and I'm given access to the safe with guns the first week.

Anyway, within 2-3 weeks after telling one of 5-6 people this, the combination on the door gets changed without anyone notifying me and a new safe is ordered that is strictly for my use for backup tapes.

Maybe its just coincidence, but basically now I know that I just need to duct tape my mouth.

Well it is crazy. But I think that is pretty much every company. They run background checks where I work but they are lax with the IT people. I guess its because we seem to go through them fairly quickly they gotta be able to put them out there and let them work!

There are 2 sets, one kept on site the other kept off site. The on site ones are kept in a fire resistant safe (I think level 2).

maybe I should stop polishing guns at my desk...that could have been a first clue
J/K

Besides, my new safe is in a much better location...the art room where they store the $5000+ paintings.

I agree with this. I never tell anyone what i'm in charge of to the fullest extent/etc....suppose one of those individuals wanted to use that against you or for some odd reason harm you- they would know where to find such and such and could even blame things on you if things disappear/things happen.

You may have been talking to a snitch, but I'm glad you did. People shouldn't have access to firearms like that, especially when the employer hasn't done any kind of background check or anything.

It's crazy what kinds of things you can get access to without proper background checks. When I worked for the federal government, I had access to top-secret government files (which, as it turns out, were actually a lot less exciting than you might think ...), and that was only with a fairly simple criminal check. Where I work now, I have access to banking information and credit card information for hundreds of people, with no background check whatsoever. I also have access to the safe full of money, to expensive computer programs, and to a collection of signed cheques. It's a good thing I'm honest!

It'd be easier to do this if there were more people in the company. Typically I don't, but seeing that there are only 40 people here the word will get out quickly who I am
Especially since I"m the ONLY IT person.

I think with that new law in the U.S. that holds companies liable for mishandled information in the next 5 years when the lawsuits are flying we'll begin to see more background checks on those with access to potentially damaging or sensitive information. Otherwise the corporations would be shooting themselves in the foot.
