My experience with these shelters was a nightmare!
As I have and 18 year old and a 13 month old bengal kitten
I wanted to adopt try to save a life if at all possibe I have the
clean and charmed enviorment My cats are beautiful~

However,
I was refused 8 times.due to my Old 18 year old!
Both my cats are very healthy my kitten is up to date and tested

however, my 18 year old has not been out to a vet for 8 years..
as he has not had any problems and the vet that use to come to my home
is no longer available..

As My old boy is aller....to shots since a baby..I in no way am going
to subject him to a vet with sick animals ec ec . he has never been
on the pavement in his life .

SOooo I would think if he were sick he would be dead by now,.

What are these shelters hiding..Millions of cats being put to death
Soooo I am now goint to by a pure bred and will never deal with
this nonsene ever again..Nowonder Maddona and Joile went
out to adopt ..the red tape is absurd..

All they have to do is make a home visit they would want to move in
them selves...My cats have everything..

Just so Madddddd how stupid these folks are..and loss to the
cats.

Shame , Shame...

I wouldn;'t let one shelter affect your opinion of all shelters. And breeders aren't always that great either, you need to find one that DOES care about where the cat will be living and your other cats and will ask you all sorts of questions about why you want a cat. Where are you located? I can recommend a great cat sanctuary in Pa but it all depends where you ar at, it is near Pittsburgh.

You sound like a wonderful home though and I think they should have did a home check to see that. Are you taking your younger kitten to the vet regularly? Did you tell them the reasons why you didn't take the 18 year old to the vet. I probably would have at least a few times though just for the routine blood panel to make sure organs and everythng are functioning correctly but majority of cat owners probably don't do that unfortunately.

Do you want a cat or kitten? I rescue and I have many here who need homes including a newborn litter who will be ready in 10 weeks or so once they are spayed and neutered

what does that really have to do with anything? They adopted children not pets. They can have their own children if they like. It actually contradicts your complaints about adopting anyways... at least it sounds like it. If they tried to adopt but had their own instead that would make more sense for you to bring them up.

Maybe the shelter was just trying to protect your older kitty from exposure the various viruses and diseases that shelter kitties sometimes carry, even after vaccinations?

I've known quite a few shelters to look at what you just said & slap "DENIED" onto the application. However, the HS I volunteer for would look past that. I guess it depends on the place. Some are very finicky & some are not near as careful.

It really upsets me to think that there are places to turn people down. There is another member here who has purebreds because of very poor experiences with shelters. Which, IMO, it awful.

I really do hope that you will not give up on shelters competely.

If you're near Pittsburgh, have you tried Animal Full Life Rescue? We got Bunny from there a few months ago. There's plenty of space on the application to explain any unusual problems. They certainly want cats to see the vet, but they don't see a need in going unless it's serious.

Bunny actually had sniffles her first week she was with us, and they advised not going to the vet unless it got worse; no point in getting antibiotics if her own system could handle it. Turned out she needed them, but Puppy also got sniffles and never needed the meds, so their advise did apply for him.

They're also really good at finding a cat that meets your needs, like getting one playful enough for your baby bengal that also won't attack your elderly kitty. When we went, they helped us narrow it down to 3 cats before we came. We met all three, and they made a suggestion for which one would be best in our family. We've been very happy with her!

I have had bad experiences with my local animal shelter. They are very rude, and don't seem to care that I am trying to help them.

I used to take the strays to them, trying to save their gas and time for other things, but they always accused me of the animal being mine, (which they certainly were NOT) I even got so hurt by their accusations that I told them who my vet is (same one for over 28 years now) and that still didn't satifsy them. They always stared at me suspiciously whenever I would go there. (I would stop once a week to play with the dogs and give them my donation of the week) They made me VERY uncomfortable and a couple of times, their snarky remarks hurt my feelings to the point where I cried.

I no longer take them donations of money, food, blankets, sleeping bags, dog beds, food bowls, etc. I used to go to the thrift store, or big lots and buy whatever was a bargain and take it to them. But their rudeness and suspicions of me as a person was just too offensive to get past.

and now when I get a stray or a litter of something dropped off on my road, I call them and make them come and get it.

I even had a friend put a deposit on a dog and they adopted it out from under her. She was devastated and was depressed for days...(I later heard a rumor that any full breed dogs were taken by the dog warden to her home, where she was found to be breeding the ones that weren't neutered yet) She is no longer dog warden.

all this is paid for with our tax dollars...who needs to be treated like that?

I won't adopt anything from them, but then, they probably wouldn't let me anyway...

I Live in Pa, too.

Not to upset you, but I can understand why the shelter wants you to have your cats up-to-date with shots, exams, etc., before bringing one of their cats into a new home. I agree, some of the shelters (and particularly our local SPCA) can be rude. However, I do think in most cases their insistence on shots, etc. comes from the heart. It's for the new pet's own good. Could you find another vet who does house calls? I know mine does, for an extra $35 (and also only on certain days of the week). How about their vet? Perhaps you could arrange something with them, since it's through their shelter. Most likely, your cat is very healthy; the problem is, the shelter needs proof of that before letting you adopt.

Someday, I'll tell everyone about my tragic experience with a dog adopted from a shelter...

Hope everything goes well for you!
