My husband has been trying to get a job for 5 months now. This week things started to turn around. He got a call back interview for a management position. They called the other night to tell him that he got the position. It comes with great benefits which start as soon as the contract is signed. My husband said that he would take it. We were so excited. The guy told my husband to think about it and to discuss it with me and then call him back the next afternoon. My husband called the man back and left a message. The man never called back. My husband has been calling since yesterday. Well he finally got a hold of the guy today and he said that his boss went over him and hired someone else for the position.
I can not believe this. They were not even going to let my husband know this.
I just wanted to let off some steam.

I'm so sorry that company treated your hubby like that. It is infuriating when they play with your life, isn't it?

Something similar happened to my hubby. He started working at a computer shop, really his dream job. Worked there for two weeks, and then something happened with the lead tech so he couldn't work in the shop anymore. No problem, he sold stuff on Ebay for them. Finally, the evil tech got fired and the boss asked Earl to work in the shop again, working on commission. He kept telling Earl that he would get the contract together, but never did. Finally, after he had been working every day in the shop for almost a month with no pay I made Earl confront the boss and find out WHEN he would get paid. The answer: "Sorry, I can't afford an accountant so I can't get a check cut for you."
He basically wasted 2-3 months for nothing, no pay.

Heidi, What about reporting that? I don't think it's legal!

Well, I know how both of you feel. I went back to college in my 40's and was called for an interview with the principal of a nearby highschool. He had two jobs open, senior choir director and English teacher. He was really impressed with my resume and interview, and said that if he couldn't have me for the choir director, he wanted me for the English position. AND, there was an opening in elementary school for a music teacher also. They would start me at a good wage and pay for my master's degree. I went home on cloud nine! It was just a formality to allow the school board to vote on it, but they always gave the principal his choice. That's why he conducted the interview. Well, I waited for two weeks, and finally called. The school board had chosen a younger teacher-for each of the three jobs.

I had 15 years with a professional opera company, a 4.0 in English, and graduated with honors, with five years on the Dean's list. Of course it had nothing to do with my being in my forties....That's against the law, isn't it? Eventually, after having similar experiences time and time again, I taught at private and Christian schools for half the wages. I just like to teach.

If my memory serves me correctly (and I believe it does) there is nothing legally that can be done in Nickis case. However, there is something that could/should have been done in your case assuming you are more qualified than the other applicants.

Jason, I realized that it was against the law to discriminate because of age, but it is my understanding that it is almost impossible to prove that age, sex, or race is the reason for the district's choice. I had three children to support, was separated, and needed a job. I took what was available.

I lost a part time English position in my own district to the niece of a school director. Despite my 4.0 and work on school newspapers, original oration, twenty years of teaching music privately, two years of substitute teaching in the public schools, community service, and a nomination for a coveted award for those who have overcome disabilities, etc., I was informed that she was better qualified. She was twenty-one.

I'm not bitter, but terribly disappointed that I had to struggle to care for my children with the experience and resume I had, while the young people with whom I was graduated, some of whom had QPA's less than 3.0 and no experience, got excellent jobs in the public schools.

The sad part is that many times even if it is illegal, the person they do it to can't afford a lawyer to attempt to get what may be rightfully theirs. Like Jeanie said, it is very difficult to prove discrimination.

In Earl's case, the guy never gave Earl a contract saying he was working on commission. Earl was also the only person there who was supposed to get paid in real money, everyone else was working for computer equipment. It would have been difficult to prove that there was even a verbal agreement because it was always discussed in private. It would turn into one person's word against the other, which can prove nothing. Besides, we couldn't afford an attourney if we wanted to.

Nikki - How frustrating!!! What a terrible thing to do to someone!!! I really hope your hubby finds another much better job soon!

Although I haven't had the same experience as most of you have mentioned I too know what its like to get you hopes up and then be dropped from a great height... I had an interview with an Interior Design Company not so long ago (my ultimate dream job) and they asked me when I could start, dicussed everything with me as if I HAD the job.. took me around the building so I knew where everything was, told me what I'd be doing and with who etc etc.... and promised me they'd be in touch in a couple of days..... well, I waited for a week and nothing, I phoned up eventually (about a week and a half later) and they just said "Oh, the position has been filled" as if I was soooo stupid for ringing - as if I should have KNOWN it had been filled..... grrrr , ah well, if they are like that, I'd rather not work for them anyway.

I have noticed though recently that emplyers seem to be getting worse with this sort of thing, when I first got married and moved to where I live now, I had quite a few interviews, and NONE of them EVER got back to me even just to say I HADN'T got the job!! I just think it is the height of rudeness.

I agree, Rhea. You could have spent that time seeking another position, and so could the rest of us. It's just not fair, but then that's what's said about life in general.

That's really really offal! I'm so sorry to here what happened. I would be furious too! You should call that guy up, the boss that went over the other guys head and tell him that he's really crumby for giving away a position that was already taken! I'd also ask him why the other canidate for the job recieved it instead of your husband. He legally has the right to know!

I'm sorry, this seems to happen all the time.

I haven't had a 'real' job for well over a year now, and believe me it's getting annoying!
We moved to a new place, with an even smaller job market about 2 months ago, my fiance finally got an ok job but only because he has friends in this area who can hook him up in the computer field.

I still haven't found anything, I've had many interviews, applied about 60 places so far. They wont even hier me for a hostess position. I'm really beginning to wonder, if there is something I do, or say, or something wrong with my resume, even though other people haven't really noticed anything. I can't figure it out.

The sound my daughter screaming a couple days ago was enough to make to loose the chance at another job =p
