Speaking of cloning...

Since we were already on the subject of cloning with another thread in this forum I was wondering about something. Is cloning technology currently being used to grow organs for transplants or is it not that evolved yet? Also, would it even be legal as of yet? This was just something I was curious about.

I believe there is significant progress happening in that area of medical research. That would be amazing, it would save so many lives, and I think it really should be limited to this kind of thing alone to stay out of the muddy ethical waters of playing God vs saving lives.

the most i saw, was they cloned a human ear and put on the back of mouse.
i would bet if you google it you could find the pics on the web.

I did remember something about cloned meat vs killing cows etc, but i dont know remember if that was real or just being talked about.

The ear on the mouse thing wasn't quite cloning - it was about cell transplantation. We used the example in a talk we did on chondrocyte cell implantation technologies in osteoarthritis of the knee.

It's a really trippy photo!! Freaked me out - can't imagine how the poor mouse felt about it!

i thought they took human, ear cells, then had it grow there?
to me that is a clone of a human body part.

yea, it is, yea, i do rememer thinking if i bet the mouse was pissed or maybe he could hear cats betters.

I'm against the cloning of entire people but I feel that being able to clone organs, such as lungs and kidneys for example, could possibly save a great many lives. What about things like being able to replace a severed hand? Or would that be too "science fiction"?

I would approve of cloning only for transplants or any other medical benefit. I am a med tech and work in a lab and we are on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week, 356 days a year for organ donors. It would be so great if we could find easier ways to make more matches for people who needed transplants.

I'd like to clone me, and Paul Stanley, and then my clone and his clone can be together. That way, even if I can't be lucky, at least my clone could be.

I don't like cloning even organs, but likely you're already eating cloned animal, where they can just grow pieces of meat.

I don't know, I might change my opinion about specific organs but whole people-- Why? What reason is there to do that?
