What is it?

I read a thread earlier in caring for strays and ferals and honestly was gobsmacked that that thread has been there for 3 days and not one person has suggested the cat be trapped and taken to a vet or offered advice.
Do people really not care or is there something more...are people too scared to
voice thier concerns for fear of reprisals or are people becoming 'immune' to
seeing these kind of pictures.
I really would like to hear your opinions on this even though I haven't posted a link
to the thread and you have no idea which thread I'm talking about...Just think of any
sad thread with heartbreaking pictures.

I don't visit that forum as I don't feel I can advise on situations like the one you describe - I have recently started visiting Pregnant Cats & Kitten Care and thats tough enough I am still wondering if my responses in there are seen as frivolous as I mainly offer 'supportive' words and the odd bit of advise here and there

Photos like the ones you suggest are difficult to look at, so thats obviously one reason why someone may feel they don't want to venture in.

People choose which forums they spend time & effort in, and well I suppose thats their right

Where you able to offer something ?

Same here, i tend to only answer in those that i feel i can add something that is helpful or true.

Do you mean the one with the injured tail?

Since the OP said "The poor thing needs her tail addressed" I'd imagine some posters thought that the OP had planned to care for the cat provided that he/she could find and catch it.
It's honestly what I assumed from the post.

I'm not sure if I have seen the particular thread you mean. I don't often visit that forum because I feel like I don't know enough to be helpful. If I see a post that no one (or few) has answered and it seems to be slipping into oblivion, I will respond with something supportive hoping not only to give that support but to boost the thread back up to where it will be noticed. Not sure if that is proper protocol or not?

I cannot imagine a more desperate or sad feeling than when dealing with a sick or injured cat. Maybe I should learn more so I can be of more help.

Oh Don't get me wrong,I'm not criticising for people not posting or giving advice.
It's just with the post and the pic being there for so long.I know that not
everyone has access to getting help with trapping and I was surprised nobody had given
any suggestions because I took it that the OP needed help.I know not everybody knows
about certain things, that can't be helped.

But the main reason for this thread is it suddenly dawned on me of the whole 'reality'
of the internet and real life and how things that happen in real life are happening on
the internet.
It's like animal abuse and sick and injured animals in the real world people just don't
see it because either they can't see it because it's behind closed doors or hidden away
somewhere or people turn a blind eye to it or people are that busy rushing around with
their own life that they just don't have time to see it.

I wanted to know if some parts of these forums are like closed doors so to speak..people
never go in there for fear of what they'll see or wether people are that busy doing other things
or wether people are hardened to see things like that.
I think the internet is a wonderful thing where people can see and do something about
the world around us,I guess I just don't like the idea that some parts of a forum are like
the real life equivalent of behind closed doors or people being too busy to see....If that
makes sense.

Oh 'reprisals' in my first post was the wrong word but
couldn't think of another way to say it

It does make sense and I thank you for opening my eyes

Same for me. I have rescued strays on average 2 a year. But I do not do things correctly and I act more on instinct and personal feelings. So I would not feel comfortable in sharing my advice.

I honestly prefer folks don't post just for the sake of posting or posting with erroneous information. As in all things, I feel it's best left to the experts and they don't need me telling them as the umteenth poster to take the cat to a vet.

I have noticed that alot of times if someone has an immediate problem, they will directly PM someone that can help them...

For example: I have received numerous PM's regarding help here in Arizona. We communicate through PM's and we even exchange phone numbers. So even though there may not be replies in their thread, there is a possibility these people could have already been contacted/or have contacted someone through PM.

But now that you are making this more aware to me, I will make sure to check it out more often... even though I honestly don't know much about this and believe advice should be left to the experts!

I always check Strays and Ferals but haven't been on very much this week so wouldn't have seen the post. I'll have to zip over there.

I will admit, I stay away from forums where I can't offer help. I would rather not mislead people that come here, as I see the entire cat site as a great place for education.

Please don't ever feel bad for not being able to give advice,Your supportive posts are
not frivolous at all, just being there for support for someone who may be at their witts end
is very compassionate ....Thank you for being there for people, I know myself sometimes it can
seem like you are on your own in this world.

Guys that would be great if you did that

I just want to say ALL you guys have warmed my heart because even though you may think you
can't help....You can...... just by checking in there every now and again because there could
always be a new member in desperate help that could post something and it be overlooked
because they may have posted in the wrong forum and there is nobody online to help.
If you see the plight of a cat there is still something you can do like Mybabyphx said you can
send a Pm to someone you think may be able to help(or even multiple pm's to be sure )

This is exactly what I mean when I said 'repercussions' although that was the wrong word I used,
I understand about giving the right advice for fear a life is lost because of that advice,I found myself
in a situation a few days ago that I had never come across before and It was a situation I knew that
could have cost kittens lives and I felt sick at the thought of making the 'wrong' decision and thank
god that there were other more experienced advisors online at the time...
A very Big thank you to Gayef and Evinea

I think people just being here and checking whenever you can,Would make a big difference, just
in case an 'emergency' was there for days before they got any advice
