My cat has been losing fur at the base of his tail for several months. Now there is a bald spot. He acts normal and eats and drinks. He does go outside. Should I take him to the vet?? Anyone know what this could be? Thanks!

It could be fleas (it only takes one, especially if they are allergic), food allergies, or stress-related. Is your cat on a vet-prescribed flea medicine, like Advantage, Frontline, Revolution, or Program? I would definitely see the vet for a check-up. They will do an exam and check for fleas. If there are signs of fleas or flea dirt, they can prescribe one of these medicines (Advantage, Frontline, and Revolution are applied to the skin on the back of the neck once per month, Program is given orally in food once per month). If there are no signs of fleas, the vet can help determine if there may be a food allergy or other cause of the hair loss.

Yes, it could be fleas. The vet will be able to tell you. My Seb is allergic to fleas, just one bite and he begins to go bald starting from the base of his tail. Let us know what the vet says. Good luck!

My Lil Bit is the same way. And she will pull hair out by the mouthfull! If he goes outside, then it probably is fleas.

hi my cat does exactly the same, been to the vet on a number of times but not really any ideas . thought at first it could be fleas but it has been months of frontline treatment and she is still bald . they gave her a injection last time and that did seem to help a little but now a month gone bye she has started doing it again. they said she could of been bite by a flea and she is allergic to the slyvia from the flea bite. but with being frontline she should not have fleas as my girl is an indoor cat.also no sign of fleas or droppings. strange!!!. if you do get any joy from your vet in what it could be then please leave thread. good luck .

Thanks for that-my cat looks like your Spot-black and white. I haven't seen fleas but that could be it. I was just worried if it was something serious. thanks again!

Frontline made Lil Bit dig and pull hair even more after I used it. The vet said it must be some type of sensitivity to the ingredients. The only thing I can use on her is Advantage or Revolution .After 24 hrs,she is back to her kitteny(is that a word?) self. Have you ever tried anything other than Frontline?
