Cable is faster then DSL, provided that you're not on a busy line during peak hours and that your cable provider doesn't have you capped below the amount of bandwidth that you're actually paying for.

Our cable provider is awful, they've given us a bad modem before and denied that it could be the problem. The connection cuts off for hours on end, it cuts off anytime they mess with the switch box down the road, and probably anytime anyone sneezes near the darn cable itself.
I'm not even going to start on how incompetent the people at the town office and tech support are...

DSL isn't an option as we're too far outside of town.

We have DSL, and love it. I gather the big difference between DSL and cable is that

* with DSL, you have a dedicated connection -- not shared with anyone, just like your phone line -- but it does matter how close you are to the switch;
* with cable, there's no distance impact, but it is a shared connection -- with anything up to 300 subscribers.

So, if you happen to be on a connection with few subscribers or never use your connection at high-traffic times, cable probably does goes like stink and leave DSL in the dust, particularly if the available DSL connection is at any significant distance from the switch. Flip those variables, though, and DSL wins. So it's pretty dependent on your location, and the available DSL and cable services, which will be better.

But they both win over dialup!

In 2000 when I first got a computer I had dial up, but only for about 3 weeks. I found that I spent so much time on the computer that my telephone was constantly tied up. I've had DSL ever since.

I work with 3D graphics and maintain a website that is graphic heavy and have to upload large graphics to it, plus I frequent several 3D graphic communities so I couldn't work with dial up because I wouldn't be able to upload the files to my web that I need to.

We have dial up

Our phone company told us that DSL was finally available but the day that it was supposed to be hooked up they called us back and said that they had made a mistake and it would not be available at our location in the near future...if ever

I am on dial up. It is all I can have besides satellite. My husband is a gamer and we were told satellite is bad for gaming. NO cable here no broadband here

Right now we have DSL through a well mobile phone carrier. We have had it 1 1/2 yrs and the company bites as does out connection and price. One day I will pony up the money to high speed satellite connection. But alas last heard it was around 600 or more to get set up for that.

I am ashamed to admit it, but I am still living in the *stone age*

Where we live they just dont offer much for internet actually. And if they do its way too over priced and we cant afford it!

Ours is through Alltel so I feel your pain. Ours is very slow no matter what speed they put us at. We are just waiting for the day Bellsouth makes it out this far. My friend has her's through Bellsouth and she says its much better.

Heh. We are waiting for the day our Dish Network contract is up, at which we'll get Comcast cable and internet, and tell Verizon to kiss our... well, you know. We can't even USE the stupid landline because of so much static, so basically we're paying $80 per month *just* for subpar DSL.

I hate Verizon.

I have DSL. I did have cable in the past, and I didn't find it to be any faster. I didn't really notice it was any slower either. What I have noticed is that the companies that offer DSL, like the telephone company for example, offer it at a much better price. Cable is do darn expensive.
