Well we brought all of my new kittens stuff today, which meant getting a collar for him.
Well i was wondering when to put it on him?
We've got one which is a reflective, with warning bell and with safety elastic, because ive read stories about cats that have collars and get caught in trees by it not having elastic on it, so made sure we got atleast one with elastic on it.

What i plan to do, is keep him in till hes 6months old, when hes old enough to be neutered, then he can go out as he pleases so then he doesnt stray away looking for unspayed females.
So whens it best to put a collar on him?

You can put the collar on him now, he should adapt easier the younger he is. Personally I prefer safety or breakaway collars over elastic with buckle, they break away entirely when caught on something whereas the elastic ones they can slip a paw through and get stuck in an awkward position.

You should keep him in for a month after he's neutered as he can still impregnate females for that time until his hormones settle.

I agree the best time to begin wearing a collar is when he is a kitten. If you begin when he is older, he may object because he isn't used to it. A safety collar is imperative. May I suggest that you consider keeping him inside even after he is neutered. Life inside is much safer for kitties, and with the proper stimulation, he will never miss life outdoors with all the perils of the road, predators, etc.

Thanks for the advice guys

Well i'm actually thinking about it, depends on his personality after he has been neutered, if i know he is lazy and wont stray to far from our garden then i'll trust him but if i know he's always looking for an adventure then i might keep him in.

Please can I suggest you get a new collar with a break away snap fastening rather than the one with elastic. Collars with elastic are not safe. I've heard of and seen pictures of cats with terrible injuries from those sort of collars. They dont' stretch far enough to allow the cat to free itself and can get caught around the chin or armpit all too easily. The only really safe type of collar is the one that will snap open if it gets caught on something.

I put one on Fergie now, just to get her used to it, if nothing else. FINDING a collar to fit her was a challenge; I finally ended up with a 5"-7" one made for those little fake dogs.

My kitten is 7 months old and very playful. So I put the collar on her when she is worn out. I tried it when she was in the playmode, and it nearly strangled her. Definitely see about a break away collar. I have 6 cats and when they did go outside alone (no more of that!) all of them came home at leasr once with no collar. I had a neighbor 6 houses away call me to tell me that she found a collar in her bushes.

I have to second this. She is very nice, and got them to me 2 days after I ordered! I've been back multiple times
